Superman Returns

I thought the movie was flat as well. The first forty five minutes. Boring as hell. Just flat, unfunny and unintersting. The next hour, pretty decent. About thirty minutes when some actual jeopardy was going on in the story, it was pretty good. But I was never bowled over by anything in this film. I place the majority of the blame on the screenwriters. They suck. Those two dudes also wrote X2 and I had the same problems with that as I had with this. The story lacked dimension and complexity. The script for X2 and Superman Returns both had this lazy, lackluster pacing to them. Way too linear and schematic. But my biggest complaint is that the film lacks personality, a quality Superman 1 had in spades. The dialogue in Supes 1 had a wit and verve to it. The scenes had energy and humor. Too many scenes in this film had a flat, uninspired tone, as if the actors were just going through the motions. Also, I think they leaned a bit too heavily on the previous movies, not thinking they had to get us reinvested in the characters, but with new actors in the roles I think that was a mistake. I found Superman/Clark and Lois Lane to be kind of dull and uninteresting for most of the film. The actors were fine, although twenty other actresses could have played Lois just as well, they just didn't give them enough good scenes and lines to deliver. That's the overall. Then there are just some logic questions the movie glosses over. I mean, Superman and Clark show up at exactly the same time and no one notices. Some ace reporters they got there at the Daily Planet. This was also a problem that was easily solvable. They should have had Clark show up first and bide his time, maybe waiting for six months before reappearing as Superman. He could finally be spurred into action by a huge event like the shuttle accident. Anyway, this is nitpicking. I just thought the film was so-so. All the elements were there for greatness, a solid actor playing Superman, an ideal actor playing Lex, a talented director, but those two screenwriters bungled it, delvering a lame, tepid screenplay. I also wasn't nuts about the look of the film. The real locations in Superman 1 helped sell the fantasy for me and too much of this had a fake, backlot glossiness to it. Personally, I had more fun watching X3. Dumb, yeah, but at least it wasn't boring.

I don't know why they stayed with the original movies' theme. They could have re-launched the series like Batman Begins did for the Batman franchise. I say this because I've been reading DC comics like a madman since my Freshman year of college (I'm a Junior now :)) and I've gotten very acquainted with the comic book Lex Luthor and Superman. This goofy Lex Luthor and overly shy Superman just didn't really do it for me. However, Superman is a character that can be done in so many different ways (ie. Movie Superman vs. Cartoon Superman vs. Comic Book Superman), so the movies don't have to be like the comics or cartoons.

That's what I think they went for, a continuation of the first films versus a full re-launch. Hence the Lois has son plot. By the way, I think the guy they got for Jimmy Olson was too old, Jimmy's a kid, not an equally aged co-worker. But yeah, I agree with what a lot of people have been saying, it was a little "blah". I wouldn't really watch it a second time, it just wasn't fun to watch.

Worst shot in the movie, in my opinion, was at the end when Superman is flying towards the sun and he's a fully 3D model and they do that major close up of him. Why do that? Just make Brandon do one more greenscreen shot, the man is Superman for this generation for crying out loud! Make him work! 3D isn't sophisticated enough yet for human close ups.

Witless, moronic, but pretty movie.

I saw it twice and there is a lot of wit in the script. The problem is that the whole theme of the movie ***SPOILER*** revolves around the father/son/father relationship -- if you're not into that, then there isn't much else to dig into.

The second time I saw it, I definitely got more out of Routh's Superman performance. I really got the sense that he's bottling up all these emotions because he feels totally alone, "alienated," if you will :P

This movie was freaking terrible. I walked out after an hour. Spacey was terrible (he's too full of himself after his Oscar). Routh was AWFUL (he just went around mumbling lines - people give him slack cuz he sort of looks like Reeves). And what's with Kumar being in Superman?? They should've just gotten Harold and the three of them could've saved White Castle. At least it would've been funny. It does not surprise me that this movie is bombing (You: $115 million after 10 days is not bombing. Me: With a $300 million dollar price tag, yes it is).

yeah the movie is a big bust.

lol I thought the same about kumar every time I saw him I smiled. I can't get over all his comic roles.

also not a cliche line in sight

what? great caesars ghost doesn't count? faster than a speeding bullet?

the thing i liked was the nod to the comic book...the very first issue of Action Comics, superman holding the car above his head...i forget which issue but it's superman holding the world - if you can't recall those two scenes in the movie then i lost you at "the thing i liked" :)

edit: forgot to add - looked great via digital projection :)

eh...spoilers... i guess...

everytime there is a coma scene in a movie...the person visiting says..."i don't know if you can hear me"...

i think lois saw the matrix too often...cause she thought if she kissed neo he would come back to life....silly...

i didnt like this movie...there were a few moments that i did...

the scene where the bad guys were kickin his ass...that sucks and pissed me off...in a good way...felt similer to the 78 film when he had the krypton around his neck...it was sad...i think that scene was helped by not showing his face often...i think just seeing the icon getting his ass kicked was powerfull...

but the rest of the movie was just weak. weak story, casting (not just superman/kent...he may have been a better choise then the rest of the cast) acting, set design, vfx...

disapointed.

not that this matters...but the theater was about 1/8 full...and half of them left before the film ended...it just didnt connect.

disappointed. still gave it a 7/10 though. and again, the summer's worst trend: too long...TOO LONG! wtf!

also badguys didnt feel threatening at all for me and the whole I’m really evil because I want lots of money and land thing was very Superman I and II. why did they play it so safe?

saw the devil wears prada within a day of this one and it was better. yeah.

Funny that no one's mentioned how the crystals cut power to everything except the JVC HD1.

Anyway, I liked it overall, but this is a(nother) great example of why CGI should never be the primary effects of any live-action movie.

I knew this movie would suck. The lack of originality should provide the cues. I was giving it a chance however because of Brian Singer. The next time a movie releases just consult me as to my prediction.

I felt the same way about War of the Worlds.

When the tripod first emerges and starts Raygunning people and you can see it in the LCD viewfinder on the guy's camcorder.

What about the EMP?

So this is just coming out on Cinemax and every reason that kept me out of the theater on this one is clear... and everything people have said that makes this movie suck are obvious. I agree, the guy who plays Superman (Brandon something or other) does a bad Christopher Reeves impersonation. The origian Superman movie was such a great movie. They just don't make 'em like that anymore... these days big budget Hollywood only seems to be interested in making things look slick... I can see why so many filmmakers are interested in getting away from the Studios these days.

I give this 2 thumbs way down...

Thanks to Superman Returns, we also got a shitty X Men 3. Bryan Singer was the best thing going for it. At least Ratner didn't cast Chris Tucker as Angel & jackie Chan as Gambit.

What about the EMP?

An EMP will only damage your equipment if it's turned on or plugged into an outlet at the time of the pulse, and even then large scale EMP effects are all speculative. Even light metallic shielding can protect against a pulse, especially one spread over a large area.
