Superman Returns

Just got back from seeing it at an IMAX 3D, and loved the movie. Certainly not as exciting as some of the recent comic movies (Batman Begins, Spider Man 2), but I really enjoyed the story, as well as the film's tone. It sort of has a naive sensibility to it, which I appreciated.

Note on the IMAX 3D-
I actually would recommend seeing it in a regular theater first, as the 3D just took me out of the film. It is worth seeing 3D, but I also found it distracting.

I agree. same here.

i am jealous, gotta wait for July 3rd to catch the sneak preview in this country. Returns officially opens on the 7th here.
guess i will have to still count the hours........

Well, Superman Returns can be added to my list of biggest movie dissapointments of the year, along with X-men 3, Silent Hill, and Cars.

I just saw it and loved it, sooooo much better than X3. I really took the time to sit and take this one in, although it probably could have been about 15-20 min shorter. I totally geeked out seeing the same titling in the beginning.

I agree that Superman is a flawed character regardless, i mean ... he's freaking superman, and he really has a short list of comparable villians as opposed to other comic book characters like spiderman.

My biggest disappointment tho, was the few kids that i have contact with, my little cousin and some kids i work with, all have the same impression of superman. Either "Eh, he's okay" or "Superman Sucks". What's with these kids? ITS SUPERMAN! HE'S SUPER DAMMNIT.

I'll agree on the IMAX 3D. I loved how huge the screen was and I got a good seat towards the back, but I found it hard to focus on the 3D parts. And putting on and taking off the glasses was distracting. I'd rather have just seen it first w/o the 3D. That way I could get fully immersed. The glasses thing breaks the illusion to a degree. Also, it seemed a little jumpy in parts. I felt that whenever the camera moved too much or an object flew through the scene (especially when it was towards the camera) I had trouble viewing it. Might just be me though.

I really enjoyed the movie as a whole. Much more solid than X3. Thought it really captured Superman's essence from the earlier movies. Not sure what he is like in the comics now.

:::::::SPOILERS:::::::
Did anyone notice that in this movie Superman seemed to be both a stalker , scene where he looks in on Lois and just lets himself into his son's room) and an attention whore, he makes a big deal of slowly putting down the car and the Daily Planet Globe like they are heavy when he just stopped a plane from crashing. That would be like someone lifting 200lbs over their head and slowly putting it down and then doing the same thing with a pen and then waving and flying off. Gotta say though the scene where he saves Psyclops, Lois and his son and the boat drops was really cool. I will give this movie another look without the 3D.

Also, was it me or were there some plot flaws?

He seems to lose his powers in the fight on top of the expanding continent when the kryptonite is barely visible, but can fly with it when the kryptonite is right in his face? Did the kryptonite only affect his invulnerability? Then why didn't he fly away when he was getting hit by Lex and his goons? Or use his heat vision or super breath, or super strength, which he needed to lift the land mass.

If this supposedly takes place after Superman II, Supes and Lois got it on after he was turned human, so thta he could be like one of us. So why would his son have super powers? Did Jor El mess that up and forget to "really" make him like us?

Overall this gets 3 1/2 capes out of 5

i didn't get the kryptonite thing at the end, but i just figured he was already into space and that's why it floated away, and then he just got knocked out from it, but maybe regained his powers on the way down???

felt great!

maybe thats all this kind of movie is meant to do?

A fun ride without much of a plot:

I knew he was gonna save the plane, becuase superman doesnt have a problem with catching stuff.

I think that is one of the major flaws of this movie, the fact that it is about super man, and super man can do anything. It could have definately been written better but I pity the screenwriter in some ways. I think that its got to be hard to make a movie about somone who can do anything and add lots of excitement or suspense, because we all know the outcome. In our modern time this movie is no technological masterpiece, and seeing somone fly around isnt impressive, so it probably doesnt have the wow factor that superman first did.

I think that it comes down to whether or not you really want to see a straightforward movie about superman and can accept the fact that its a little childish silly and cliched. If you can, then you can have a lot of fun with the movie, if not you probably want to skip it.

In my oppinion it wasnt a great movie but I had fun even though it was a little long. I also felt it got a great reaction from the audience, when I saw it a lot of the theater was clapping laughing cheering quite frequently throughout the movie.

the second time he went below the expanding continent and picked up the earth beneath it. the ground starts to fall off though and he gets closer and closer to the kryptonite and he starts to loose his powers agian.

I dont think we need SuperMan, (as a character, not the movie) because without SuperMan, we wouldnt have villains.

Superman Returns

Just thought this topic deserved its own thread.
Just got home from seeing Superman Returns and I gotta say, I damn near cried from the start and all throughout the movie... they were so faithful to the originals, and the actor they chose looks nothing like Christopher Reeves as superman, but for some reason is a carbon copy as Clark Kent. The smile, the hair (just about), the goofy antics and the voice. Cristopher Reeves (in my opinion) deserves so much respect, I felt emotional because the creators of this film succeeded in making a truly original film in itself, full of action Drama and spectaculer acting by kevin spacey and Brandon Routh (i think thats his name), they were able to inbed every iconic moment throughout supermans history making you believe this is the first of all the films, also not a cliche line in sight (except for one that was so obvious it was on purpose it was stopped in mid sentence), and the most important.... they stayed true and did not tarnish the legacy of the man of steel, both the character and the man who personified him.

man it aint out yet here in the UK, so please dont commment on the plot (pretty please) 'cuz I wanna enjoy this one.

It was ok.

Long. Flat. But not badly done. So I just give it an "ok", comared to the really bad movies they make.

Lois wasn't Lois, though. Could have been anyone. Not saying her acting was bad or anything, just...

Sadly, I liked the Mountain Dew commercial better that came on before the film. That was exciting. And, no, I'm not kidding.

I don't know if anyone here is a fan of the Dead Zone. But the character son triangle plot is basically lifted from that.

That and it didn't end. I thought it was a pretty good film till they went to beach front krypton land.

I've already seen the movie so it doesn't affect me but I for the benefit of others I think we should put some indication if there are spoilers.
