The outdoors stuff looks fairly Super-8-ish. A few things:

You need a *LOT* more grain. Super-8 is super-grain.

Also, you shouldn't letterbox it. Super-8 is a 4x3 format.

Also, frequently you'll see super8 movies with a little rounded-corner vignetting on the corners, that helps to sell the technique.

Skate PC, Thanks for the feed back bro.

Barry, Thanks for the tips. I didn't realize that SUPER 8 was 4:3. LOL! What a rookie mistake. The vignetting is a great idea I'll try that. I wish I had of done that during shooting.

Thanks again guys.

more feedback welcome.

In fact, I'd suggest putting a little border burn all around it:

david, i love the image quality and how it looks...but that black border is pretty annoying looking to me. It could be just me but i dread vignetting and making a black border around the whole thing makes it look (to me) extremely fake.

It was inspired by the opening credits of "The Wonder Years," where the film has the border. It's what Super8 -- especially aged -- tends to look like. Blame the film stock, not me . . .

Keep in mind that it's also against the beige-ish background of the message board here. Most of the time, when you're watching clips in other media, you're seeing it against a BLACK background. It makes a big difference, because you can't tell where the actual edges really begin.

Make it more or less to taste, of course. But even newly-shot Super8 often has the vignettting in the corners.

That vignetting example looks way overdone in my opinion.

As for the video, looks all right but you've got a pretty major problem: Super 8 doesn't tend to have interlacing! ;)

...and super8 also doesn't have that shallow DOF I think, because the film is too small. :) The CCDs of the DVX100 are just about 8,33mm wide, and super8 film is 8mm wide, so the DVX should have a more shallow DOF than a super8 camera even without the adapter. :)

I would also lay off the 35adapter if you want true to life super8 looking footage. The field of view of super8 footage is closer to that of a 1/3" CCD than it is 35mm.

Don't want to derail this thread - but the CCDs of the DVX are 4.8mm wide (6mm in diagonal).
And a super 8 frame is about 5.68mm wide (roughly 7mm in diagonal).

So it seems that Super8 has a bit shallower depth of field than the DVX.

(i wish the DVX had 8.33mm wide chips - that would be getting really close to Varicam sized chips)

some nice stuff in there rook. Do you go to Ryerson Uni? I lived with some canadian girls who are in their final yr doing TV in Toronto. Was a great couple of months. Canadian girls are well horny (and kinda annoying) they say "Eh" after every third word. Top laugh.

lawsuit boy, thanks.

Danm, naw I finished school I do this kinda stuff now. And yeah Toronto girls are horny...lets put it this way, a friend of mine works for the toronto tourism board and she was telling me that they have been trying to find ways to include the fact that in Toronto it is notoriously easy to hook up.

John, I think you need to burn the edges a bit more.

bigups,

Nice work man, i dug the feel there, I know what you mean about the weather, i'm in Toronto too and damn its insane how warm its been all month, I actually want the cold so I can go snowboarding but no such luck yet. Haha I dunno about the horny girls, I think you can find those anywhere, just have to know where to look lmao. But i've been to some Ryerson/UofT keggers and I can't say i've been disappointed ;) Anyways keep it up man, Cheers!
