Super Compact Atmos Ninja-Star Recorder : $295

According to an email I received from Atomos support the Star will record 720p60 but not 1080p60.

Probably because there is no 1080/60p broadcast standard. Seems perfectly understandable to me.

This will be a great little thing to have in your grab bag. Wish it was HD-SDI. Will grab one anyway.

According to the video below (someone else posted it on DVXUser), Atomos says that if there is enough desire for HD-SDI they'll make a version with it.

If you're interested in the Ninja Star, it is a must watch.

After watching the video the main take away I have is that this is trying to be the smallest & lightest ProRes recorder on the market. If you're looking to put one on a drone (or something else very weight sensitive), for less than $700 to get it operational this is a good deal. And it'll be even cheaper as CFast 1.0 cards go down in price & up in size.

Terry, have you let Atomos know? Do you want pass through too for both SDI / HDMI? Or just two inputs?

Would the mini SDI input work (as found on the Blackmagic Hyperdeck Shuttle)? (DIN 1.0/2.3 connector)

I'm thinking the best would be In / Out of locking micro HDMI & mini SDI. If they can do that for $495, that'd be great. Even better if there was conversion (SDI in = SDI & HDMI out, HDMI in = HDMI & SDI out).

@Tim Nitsch, there's a dude in another forum who bought one. I'll let you know when he reports back.

I do not understand why they went with cfast cards? While there are plenty of fast SD or CF cards, they went with most expensive possibility and the least established. As the insult to the injury now Cfast cards will also require a separate card reader (they run between 45 and $100). While the recorder is small, not I have to log around another piece of gear in thwe field, so I can download the footage.

Got all excited then realized it takes CFfast cards. That puts the price right back up with the Ninja 2, and for that price I'd rather have the Ninja2. It obviously a well thoughtout strateegery and quite obvious, either someone high up in Atomos married the daughter of the CEO of a major fast card manufacture, or they bough a lot of stock, in a get rich quick scheme.

Waiting a a year or two for the prices to drop is like 10,000 dog years.

Don't confuse the CFAST type I and type II cards. This one only needs the cheaper type I.

What attracted me to Atomos was the cheap hard drive storage and not having to transcode. The Ninja Star is right back to square one again with the storage problems and cost. I'll admit it does transcode though but for that there are free software.

Now if it took my collection of CF cards I'd buy it in a heart beat. For most of us I imagine we already have a good collection of CF cards, I don't need to buy any more just to use in the Star that's crazy! I tell you someone got hitched!

The price is right, but it only records 1080p30 or 720p60. I think most people are expecting to get 1080p60 or 720p120 out of their action cameras these days.

Say there was a 4K version, what would you be willing to pay for that ?

i.e. $600, $900, $1200 ?
I'd pay up to $750 for simple 4K ProRes 10 Bit 4:2:2 recording. Any more and it gets too expensive when considering the cost of the CFast media (because it would likely require the CFast 2 type cards which are more expensive).
