Super 8 is really a cool tool to use and add to your videos.  It serves as really nice B-roll footage.  Plus it is real film...for cheap.

There are some companies that make custom Super 8 cartridges.  What they do is that they insert 35mm film into Super 8 cartridges.  The quality is real awesome...real grainy but real cool.

Oliver Stone uses a lot of Super 8 in his films...you can find a lot of articles about this on the web.  Typically those films need to be ranked by some developing house...but if you buy kodachrome 40 or Ektachrome VNF film from Kodak (around $12 each cartridge...less if you buy 5 or more!) you can have them processed and view them using an old old projector.

On Ebay you can find some good deals on projectors and cameras.  If you do not have one a camera yet get a Canon (Canon 514xl is a good choice...a Canon 1014 is an awesome choice) .  Try to get one that used to shoot sound (eventhough they don't make sound cartridges anymore)  but this will give you the chance to shoot 24 frames.  All the rest will leave you with only 18 frames....makes it harder to synch sound if you are doing a music video...it is possible but tricky.

That's my two cents![/quote]
Thanks!

Re: Super 8 with dvx100A

I think your clip brings people back to earth in regards to what's obtainable with filters versus the real thing. This video perfectly emulates the "feeling" of the music it's portraying.

Great work.

Re: Super 8 with dvx100A

man...  I've watched this so many times.  The editing was f'in awesome.

Did you have an underwater housing for the cam or was it shot outside the tank?

And does the band have a CD yet?  Im diggin' this song now.

Haha! The funniest part was the 2 old guys in the workout jumper suits. That guy was totally rockin' out.

Re: Super 8 with dvx100A

great work! who are these guys? is there an mp3 or cd i could get my hands on? these guys are gonna blow up

Re: Super 8 with dvx100A

Judo--Wow. That was amazing--I loved the video and the song. The style of the video really fits the band and the whole look and style is beautiful. Definitely show us your homemade ringlight when you get a chance--it really made the look. And tell Captain Fantastic to book a show in DC. :)

Re: Super 8 with dvx100A

whats a good projector to screen the super 8 on? I'm sorry if this has been posted somehwere on the site. i just want to know what your friend used to screen your video. If you don't know, but know of a good projector, tell me.

Thanks

ev1lbutler:

depends on what you are willing to spend. The drawback of a projector is that you usually get a hot spot in the center of the picture image. Also in some cases you get the screen fabric as part of your image once you zoom in with a camcorder.

There is a company out there that makes a special telecine. This unit is designed for super high quality transfers of regular 8mm and super 8mm film to NTSC video at a real time speed of 20fps.

Though Super 8mm film was ostensibly shot at approximately 18fps, transferring at 20fps looks normal, plays more smoothly and is flicker free; something not possible at 18fps due to conflicts in scan rates and blade configurations.

It offers full frame viewing via an enlarged gate and the ability to shoot right off the emulsion of the film via a jumbo 5 inch condenser lens. The original lamp has been replaced with a low heat, diffused 40 watt light source that lasts over 1500 hours, costs less than a buck and is available in hardware stores the world over.

The entire unit is completely refurbished prior to modification with all metal film surfaces polished, belts replaced and all mechanicals cleaned and lubed.

The system has a maximum capacity of 400 feet (take up reel included) and comes with the condenser lens pre-aligned on a convenient base. This unit works best with a camera possessing a 12x or better optical zoom.

This is a serious transfer unit for both the commercial telecine business or the home 8mm enthusiast. The end result is a flicker free image that is sharp corner to corner with no hot spot and a clarity once reserved for only the finest professional transfer houses.

It goes for about $1095.00 and it takes about 7 weeks to make. They don't have them in stock...they make them as people order them. The quality is real good...better than anything I've seen.

Re: Super 8 with dvx100A

The last Super-8 projector I owned was an Elmo ST1200 (now happily living in Australia). That Elmo was one beautiful projector, but is probably a bit pricey. I would hit some local flea markets or even ask around and you might find a free or very cheap projector. Super-8 equipment is mostly unloved these days. :'( Considering that you're probably going for a stylized look, no need to get fancy. There's always a bunch of cheap projectors on ebay--I see a cute little Bolex in one auction ending soon.

Out of curiosity, which camera & film stock did you use.

I've had desent results with a canon electric 1014 and kodaks film, but I've seen other film stocks available, from I think it was procam or pro8 or pro16 some company like that.

We also made a short comercial togheter with S-8 but with pro8mm stock film and there scanner.
we used the daylight 50 asa and 250 asa.
we tried the 500 and 800 film but they where way to noise for our taste and this project.
