GH1 Stupid Question

Ok. I know the M43 cameras have a two time crop factor. Put a 50mm canon fd on there and it is a 100mm. I always assumed that the native m43 lenses however had no crop factor. So the 20mm pancake would still be 20mm.

I looked at another forum where someone said that there was a crop factor for these as well. Is this true?

20mm = 20mm = 20mm

A FF35 20mm will look the same as native m43 20mm *when both are used on a m43 body.

From Panasonic's website:

The LUMIX G 20 mm / F1.7 ASPH features a dramatic compactness and light weight despite its F1.7 brightness allowing a beautiful soft focus for photos to be even more impressive.
Comprising of seven lenses in five groups, the new lens system uses two aspherical lenses most effectively to minimize both distortion and chromatic aberrations, achieving super high resolution corner to corner. The versatile 20 mm of focal distance (Equivalent to 40 mm on a 35 mm film camera) is suitable for wide variety of occasions from daily snapshots including scenery like sunsets and dimly lit indoor shots to the deliberately creative shots taking advantage of its beautiful soft focus. When mounted on the LUMIX G Micro System Cameras, the LUMIX G 20 mm / F1.7 ASPH allows use of the advanced contrast AF system, which includes a Face Recognition function, for more convenient, more enjoyable shooting.
Seven blades give the aperture a rounded shape that produces an attractively smooth effect in out-of-focus areas when shooting at larger aperture settings. The LUMIX G 20 mm / F1.7 ASPH lens also features a highly reliable metal mount, and uses multi-coated lens elements that minimize ghosts and flare to further enhance its optical performance.

What he said.

No, no, no.

While it is correct that a 20mm is always a 20mm, the OP's question referred to the crop factor introduced by the smaller sensor of the m43 system. The native part of the panasonic 20mm lens refers to the mount and while the lens has a 20mm focal length, it's angle of view when mounted on the m43 systems become a 40mm equivalent to FF, just like any other lens.

Change from what? A 20mm lens on a 5DmkII? It absolutely displays a narrower angle of view (40mm equivalent) but it delivers images with a 20mm "character".
A 20mm on the 5D MKII is a super wide angle with 84deg FOV like a 10mm on the GH2.

This has been discussed extensively, and one could read for several days about it, but I would simply make two points. The first is that if you are used to a 24mm, which is more common, on a 35mm camera, the 20mm on the Panasonic or Olly m43 is going to NOT look like that. Not at all. Not even close. The closest you can come is to park say a 14-45mm zoom, open it up to 14mm, and say, well that looks wideangle-ish. The second is that even if you multiply all the angles out, and compare to Panny 20mm it to say a 35mm, 40mm, or even a 45mm, it will still look different. The lens behaves differently. My lovely old glass primes just don't look razor sharp wide open, and there are differences in the angles because the lenses are so different.
