Strapping it on

I'm in the process of acquiring a 5D however I have one concern...handling.

I'm well aware of my limits and one of those is clumsiness. Being a big gregarious guy is great fun at parties, and the ladies certainly love a teddy bear however ninjitsu is out of my career prospects for this lifetime.

I suffer a recurring nightmare where I'm leaning over the Hoover Dam and my precious 5d slips out of my hand as I'm distracted by the scent of tourist trap popcorn.

In light of these revelations I'm concerned about the 5D's girth and weight and how that will translate into real-world handling. Note I carry a camera with me at all times. The 5D is certainly a *manly* camera at 1.96 pounds sans lens. I'm not worried about the weight in hand as much as I'm worried about the weight when it leaves the hand.

Now with a traditional video camera I can bind the strap to my hand from the moment the camera leaves the case until it returns. With my Leica R's, I use a cheap Optech strap however the Leica is a fraction of the weight of the 5D.

With that said, what's the best option to secure my 5D these days? I gravitate toward shooting in urban environments so a "good" strap would be one that would survive one of the locals trying to snap it off of my neck...the Optech is foam and would break away in an instant, but it's comfy.

I'm sure that the wealth of digital media professionals on DVXUser have fantastic opinions on this issue. Thank you for any advice you can offer. (also I have a fetish for nifty accessories)

Regards,
Christopher

As a photographer, I always have a neck strap secured on my camera. Always. Sometimes I don't wear it, but it's extremely rare for the to come up. A lot of times I have two cameras with different lenses and swap between them, so I have to know that they won't fall to the ground when I let go in a hurry. That's my recommendation; a good neck strap and caution. You can also wrap the neck strap around your hand a couple of times if you're not wearing it as extra protection.

Well, as long as it feels good... Why not!

(4) "good strap would be one that would survive one of the locals "

Poor locals: Depends on the Country. I'd check local government laws first.

Not going there!

(8) " ladies certainly love a teddy bear "

Well, we all have names for it.... Or maybe a Gillette is in need!

I suggest something in leather

there's also those hand/grip support straps.

I haven't handled a MKII yet but I had a D90 (slightly lighter) and it spent most of its time on a steadytracker, great for jello and beating the locals over the head.

I bought a hand grip from camdapter and although it's not perfect, I won't go without it now. http://www.camdapter.com/

I have that grip strap attached all the time, and also attached a tamrac neck strap with quick disconnects.

Thank you all for your consideration.

That camdapter seems like a fabulous option. It reminds me of a bangkok elephant ride.

I also ran across this option for the 5d:

While one may not possess ninjitude, one can project ninjitude.

In researching this option a few of the comments regarding its performance suggested that grit may penetrate under the armor and scratch up the finish.

xiexie.

That camadapter plate looks like it might make a good support for a viewfinder.

Dang, I had not thought of that! I'll have to try that, however, it will be quite ergonomically disastrous. But that won't stop me from trying it.
