1DC: Still using the Canon 1DC!

Just wanted to say I'm still using the Canon 1D C (purchased another unit a few months ago, after selling my previous 1DC last year)! I've been using the Super 35mm Crop for a recent corporate video (which looks fantastic). Haven't shot much using 4K, but I have tested and images look great! No chatter on the forum recently (I'm sure due to the Canon 1DX II). How are you using your 1DC today?

I don't have one, but always wanted to have one. Now I am saving up and waiting for the 1D C Mark II coming in 2017.

You can pick up a pre-owned 1DC and use it until the 1DC MK II appears (if that occurs). Really GREAT deals on pre-owned (Practically Mint) 1DC's on the market right now! My recent 1DC purchase was practically BRAND NEW with extra accessories. Check here on the forum periodically and on ebay.

Is the internal 1080p on the 1DC really that much better than 5D Mark III footage? Is it very sharp?

The 4K (even if down-scaled to 1080 in post) on the 1DC always looked great to me, much better than the 5D.

If you shoot in the Super 35 mode at 1080 on the 1DC it is just as sharp as the C300 /C100. If you shoot in full frame mode it is pretty similar to the 5D Mark III.

In S35, it isn't quite as sharp as the C series, but it cuts just fine. In some ways, it's slightly better if you don't want the crisper image of the C100/300. The 1080p is the same as the 1DX, which I understand is just slightly more detailed than the 5D3, but cuts just fine with the 5D3. The HDMI output of the 1DC in 4K mode is as crisp as the C100 if you are using an external recorder. None of the footage has that over sharpened video look. The 1DC is much more versatile than most people know.

The 1D C can output 4K externally? Raw?

No to both.

The 1Dc will output uncompressed, 8bit HD. Very clean, but the most competent record mode is the internal 4k.

Can you record 4K internal while recording HD proxy external? Would be nice to slap a ninja star on top and have HD ProRes dailies and finish in 4K.

The most watched film on Netflix (Nov 5th, 2020) was shot on the 1DC!

'Knock KNock' (2015)

Starring Keanu Reeves and Ana de Armas

I use the Canon 1DC regularly.

I still love the image that comes out of it - though my other cameras are Canon C300 (mark1) and Fuji XT3 - so can't really compare it to the new cameras that i'm trying to resist being seduced by.

I've been needing and looking to upgrade my Canon c300 but if my 1DC had autofocus and ND's, I don't think I'd bother as, for what I need, the image is great.
And it also takes wonderful still photographs.

I bought my 1DC second hand. It had been working like a dream for a number of years in tough environments across the world, then one day (on a local shoot), it went dead. Took it to a local Canon repair place and they had to replace the board on it - nearly £1000!

Outside that, which was just my bad luck, I love this camera both for video and stills. I've thought about buying another 1DC 2nd hand, as the replacement for my Canon C300, but I think I need the ND's and autofocus so was looking at Canon C200 (thanks to comments from wise words on other threads in this forum), the Canon C70... and now the FX6 is just announced I've found myself lost in all it's hype.

WOw! that is cool! I have to agree, stellar image.

To this day, I don't think there is a camera I've encountered that felt as good to hold. I really appreciated the ergonomic feel of that grip. The weather sealing and build quality was confidence inspiring too. that with proper EV integration would be my dream camera. C70MK2 could be on my radar, but I am skeptical it will have that same tactile feel as the 1DC. I think a camera should be designed so that you want to hold it.

The whole thing? That's incredible if so. Just wondering why they didn't use something a little more production-ready/production-friendly.

The film was shot likely in 2014, and was fairly low budget. Keanu did a bunch of random projects that most people haven't heard of, but they've all sort of reserved with his current status.

As to the exact reason why, I think at the time, film makers were still exploring cheaper method via DSLR. At the time, I don't think Ana de Armas was well known internationally, so was a fairly low budget semi experimental film, I suppose. Seemed the director wanted the freedom. Could have been the low light ability, as well. I read about it, but I forget. If I find the article, I'll post it here.

I recall watching it when it came out, as I was a 1DC owner, and interested how they may have handled it, and for the most part it does well. And I think or most audience types it should distract.

I didn't feel the film was particularly good, just referring more to the production aspects, though absolutely adequate for the story. I can only guess it is trending because of the pandemic and Keanu's now cult like status, and Ana de Armas being now A-list. But at least the trailer gives an idea how the 1DC held up.

Here is one article, but isn't very informative.

I surmise they chose the 1DC because it would allow them to shoot more quickly on a tight schedule, and make camera placement easier.

Considering the DP was coming from primarily film, the camera held up well.

Having tried out the Canon C70, I feel the C70 is a much better choice for you over the C200 if you like the handle, look and feel of the 1DC. Plus with the rocking 1.7x Canon speed booster, you get full frame FOV from your lenses. It's not that much bigger than the 1DC and certainly not much heavier. It also has the same yummy DGO sensor as the C300, so really clean images and usable DR. The C200 gives you internal raw lite and SDI over the C70.

Yes, I do love filming with the 1DC and, if it had the autofocus and ND's I don't think I'd be wanting to get a new camera......ok, that's a lie...I always want to get a new camera!

I've got some wonderful images from the 1DC, and the photos that come from the camera are amazing. I still use it all the time filming and photos with great results in both.

I do like the look of the Canon C70 as it seem pretty good for travelling and moving about with. Has anyone tried it yet? I've seen a few Youtube videos but nothing that comprehensive yet.

I've seen a few decent deals on second hand C200's here in the UK and debating that too.

Again, I'm still so happy with the 1DC's images but having autofocus and onboard ND's would help my life a lot.

Why was the 1D C never approved for Netflix? Isn't 4K24 with a sensor size of at least Super 35 enough to be considered?
