Step-by-step instructions for the new GH1 Ptool hack: "GH17 Lenin" (2011 cameras)

*In a elementary-school voice* No, you first!

Assuming UPS is kind enough to deliver my new body today, I will.

ha, ha...got mine first :)
of course, i'm the genius that didn't order the super-fast memory card while I had the chance.....doh!!!!
Yea, got a class 4, and 2 sd cards(no hc)......good times here ;)
now you can try the "service menu" thingy and see if you get the yellow exclamation triangle too. Bet you won't see rom backup until you enable it the first time.

L; thanks, that's kinda what I thought. if it's anything outside of the 3 folder basic file structure, then the camera will ignore all others. i'm going to try going from the go pro hd to the gh 1, and see if I can use the same card for both. but, not today.

I've used a card between my GoPro and GH1 without a problem.

Help needed please! I've gone through the steps shown for the GH17 hack on page one, but can't get the 40mbs Reliability Patch (j) to load on the Ptool and I can't figure it out, I must have tried 20 times ! As far as I know I have gone through it step by step, but when I click on "j", it comes up "no settings file"....I am at a loss at what to do next......Thanks.

You could try downloading the patch again.
Make sure to change the increment from 1 to 10 (as explained in step 8).
Format the card again in the GH1 (step 10) - even if you formatted it before.

If it still doesn't work - try a different card. It is possible there's something wrong with the card.

I've not got to the card stage yet, I'm still trying to add the patch to the Ptool, just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Might delete the Downloads and start from scratch. Thanks for your quick reply, I'll let you know how I get on.

When you click the patch letter; "Settings loaded" flashes really quickly - you won't see that message permanently sitting there on the Ptool interface.
The actual settings/check boxes within Ptool that get checked by the patch won't be visible unless you go through the end users settings and the certain boxes will be checked/unchecked. But if you do go through those, just leave them be as the patch set them.

It sounds like nothing you did went wrong. You need to go to the card stage to execute the hack/press the play button on the camera in order to see if it worked/asks you to up the firmware.

(I changed the instructions in Step 8a. which now explains it more.)

When I click on Patches for end users, nothing happens, the 3 top boxes remain checked, but that's it.

You have to double-click on "Patches for end users" and then the options, like "Battery", "Interface", "Movie related restrictions", etc appear.

But to clarify; you don't have to go through Patches for end users in order to do the hack with a patch. I was just saying that, if you are curious to see what settings the patch applied - you go through to look at them.
Those end user settings are for more advance users who know what settings to manually change.

So, for your first hack: Go through all the steps, when you get to step 8a and click the patch letter - just make sure that "New Body" is checked if it becomes unchecked after clicking the letter - then "Save Firmware" as the new name (replacing 132 with 135) copy the new file to the card, take the card out and put it into the camera.
Press play button until it ask you to up version, then select Yes, then hit set - then wait until progress bar is completed before touching anything (important).

Turn power off, take out the card - put in a card for video storage, do tests shoots - check the video bit rate/frame rate on your PC with MediaInfo to see if it is different than unhacked; for example bit rate above 17mbps/which is the unhacked max bit rate. (It still may stay under 17 even with the hack - that is normal - depends on the detail of the scene.) If you went through the step and got to the point where the camera asked you to up the version and let it go through the end of the progress bar - this is going to be a successful hack.
Things like bit rate bit rate/improvements might not be immediately noticeable until you familiarize yourself with what's going on.

That's all you have to do - you don't have to go through patches for end users. If it didn't work, no harm done - try again from Step 3.

Any other questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks for all your help,, but still having no luck! I can get the Firmware loaded into the Ptool, but not the Patch, so I'm calling it a night, have look with fresh eyes in the morning. Have to confess, I am no expert when it comes to this sort of thing, by the time I figure it out, the next version will be out !

There's nothing to look for - the "settings loaded" flashes really quick.
As per the instructions, you have to have the extracted patch in the same folder as Ptool and the Panasonic GH1__132.bin firmware.
After saving the firmware, there won't be any extra files made ecxcept the newly named GH1__135.bin file: the information from the patch will be in there and just paste only that file to the card.

Go to the card step and see if it works - don't worry about looking for things.

The "patch" are ini files, seta, setb, setc.ini, etc. You get these ini files from the posts on here, with zip files, that contain the patch you want. You unzip these patches into the same folder you have Ptools in. Open Ptools, load firmware 1.32. Now, on the bottom of Ptools you will see a bunch of letters, starting with a. If you have say the "reliable in camera playback" patch, you would click the letter "j"(I think that's what's tied to that one). That in turn loads all the patches information onto the firmware you loaded initially.
Then, double check that the three top boxes are checked, and also check the version increment box says 10(all the V2 patches have the correct setting for the new bodies). Then, save as; and name it; GH1__130.bin(or whatever-as long as you have the correct double underscore).
Now, take your newly created GH1__130.bin file, and use your computer to copy it to the root directory of a card that was formatted in the camera. Put the card in, turn on the camera, push play, and use the arrow pad to select yes, to upgrade the firmware.
Make sure you have the auto EVF switching function turned off first, and do not touch any buttons until the upgrade is finished. Takes about a minute.

All that happens when I click on the "j" is that " No Settings File" flashes up very quickly! Just realised, all the buttons at the bottom of the Ptool are red, maybe that will give someone a clue as to where I am going wrong.

If adding a patch, one letter should be green.

5a. ...If you are planning on adding patches other than what's in Ptool, then download the patch. Right-click on the patch, choose "Extract all" and then browse and extract the file to that same Hack Folder.
Just to clarify; you are doing all of this on your PC, not on the card.
You paste the new firmware file to your card near the end of the steps.

Hi, Yes, this is all on the PC, none of the letters are green, doesn't seem to be any problem with adding the Panasonic Firmware to the Ptool, or the version increment, it's just the last stage of adding the "j" patch....nothing happens! As I said before, I'm no expert on PC's etc, so I'm probably doing something wrong, I would imagine the best bet for me, would be if someone could email the completed file, ready to put on a card, don't even know it that is possible! Once again, thanks for all the help.....Dave.

I'm not an expert, either, but know enough to do the hack.

As far as the file with the settings already on it - if that were the case, I think people would be posting pre-made firmware already.

But, I could be wrong - so I pm'ed you a link to an already hacked file.

Let us know if it works out.

Thanks, I'm assuming this is the latest version of Ptool for the Unhackable Gh1's and the Ver2 of the 40mbs Reliability Patch? Iwas going to use the card I use in the camera (only got the one), but I think I'll get a cheapo SD Card in the morning to do the job.

I did it last week.. might be v1, but it worked for me on newer model/no issues.

I also just pm'ed you v2.

The latest version of Ptool and all the patches can hack any camera, new or old.
