Step-by-step instructions for the new GH1 Ptool hack: "GH17 Lenin" (2011 cameras)

Thanks, I'm assuming this is the latest version of Ptool for the Unhackable Gh1's and the Ver2 of the 40mbs Reliability Patch? Iwas going to use the card I use in the camera (only got the one), but I think I'll get a cheapo SD Card in the morning to do the job.
Just use one of the cards you already have. When your done updating the firmware-format the card in the camera(again), and start shooting. You don't need a "special" firmware hack card or anything like that. A card is a card.

You don't need a special card - but it's convenient to have separate cards with separate hacks.

Dave brings up an interesting point, though: why would it matter to the camera what computer the hack was created on?
I sent him a bin file hack with a patch installed.
After I thought about this, there's no reason it shouldn't work.

The only risk in distributing firmware files (which actually sounds like a great idea to me) is that whenever a new version of Ptool is released, or a new version of a patch, the firmware file would be out-of-date. But as long as we're careful I don't see any reason not to distribute .bin files. That's how Panasonic does it! :p

I would have to strongly caution users to be wary of installing a firmware BIN file from any source other than Panasonic itself. There is no reliable way to verify the contents of a firmware BIN file from an unauthorized source. Using PTool, it is quite easy to inadvertently produce a hacked firmware BIN file that once installed, would render the camera dysfunctional and/or make it unhackable and non-restorable. At this point, PTool INI files are the most reliable and verifiable means of distributing GH1 patches online.

I wonder what checks pTool does to make sure that the firmware is 'correct' one. It do not seem to allow modified bin files to be opened. Wonder if it only checks for the values that it intend to modify or do some other checks like a checksum or hash values.

Finally managed to get the 40mbs Reliability Patch loaded now, thanks for all the help from the Forum members, was really struggling, couldn't have done it without you! Firmware read 0.0, if I want to use the 100mbs Max Lattitude Patch, do I just load it on a card and swap over, do I need to change versions etc, can I just keep swapping between cards depending on what I need, once they are loaded on seperate SD Cards? Sorry about all the questions, but I just like to be sure, especially on something that cost me the best part of £1000 last July! will have to try and get out and about this weekend and do some testing, though the weather forecast isn't great, we shall see.

Just been out in the yard and did 3 test clips, SH, FHD and 720 Hd mjpeg. Each clip is about 3mins and there were no failures, I did alot of foliage, flowerrs, brickwork, panning etc. When I came to play them back on the PC, the mjpeg clip was fine, but the avchd clips were like watching a series of stills! Anyone got any clues,I must have done something wrong.

It should read 0.0 with the hacks.
yeh, just write over the previous version, provided it's named something different.

Your PC might not be able to handle the high bit rate HD playback.

You can download Splash Lite player, it uses GPU:

Yea, play them with windows media player. It's a 60i wrapper with a 3:2 pulldown. For some reason, windows media player plays the 24P files just fine-it de-interlaces them, and they look great. However, if you use VLC to watch them, it looks like a slide show, with a white veil over it.

Remember, with the high reliability patch, your 24P video, still isn't native. You still need to reverse-telecine the clip to native 24P using Neoscene.

Panic over...LOL....I hooked the camera up to the tv and it was fine. I then went back to the PC and played it with Nero Kwik Media and that was great...happy, happy, happy! The real test will come when I get out to film some trains, but I can see the difference already, the 720p 50fps is excellent. I output the camera at 720p because our 37inch Panasonic Plasma tv is only HD ready...1080i, so 720p looks better. After saying that, it is supposed to be able to handle Blu Ray at 24p, which seems a bit strange as we are in PAL land. All I need to do now is get a Blu Ray Writer for the PC, and a Blu Ray Player to hook up to the TV!...oh, and an external mike, might stick with the Panasonic and the Panasonic 100-300mm lens.

Can you load multiple patches? Like the "Blackout-Powell Native 24p Patch" & the "40Mbps AVCHD High Reliability Patch". Just open them in the hack folder with GH1__132.bin & ptool3, then when loading the hack click on the coresponding buttons, "J" for the high reliability patch, and "B" for the Blackout-Powell patch?

Nope, each patch is a different set of settings, so clicking on each clears and overwrites the last.

Thanks for the info CColton. Now I have to study a bit to learn what the two patches do to determine which of the two to apply.

So the 40Mbps AVCHD High Reliability Patch allows the GH1 to shoot at a higher bit rate, which reduces or eliminates the distortion called "mud" and captures greater detail as well?

Hi Dave - what did you do to resolve your problem? No matter what I do, my PTools is not picking up the ini files and the letters are staying red, not green. Seemed you had a similar problem so what did you do to sort it out? I'm on a Mac with a winebottled PTools, but it's otherwise working fine so I'm not sure what the problem is...

Ah... just solved. Just in case anyone else has Mac problems. You can't create your own folder where you want it on the HD with the ini and bin files. You must put them in the same fodler that Winebottler creates for the .exe file. Buried deep in the Library - open your winebottled app and it will show you the directory structure when you ask it to load firmware.
