Star Trek

If I were appealing a jury verdict, I'd sure try and make something of the fact that one juror showed up in a Star Trek uniform and believed herself a member of an organization on par with the military/Starfleet...

You could, I suppose, try to make an argument for inadequate counsel, but that would probably be your only way in on that one. Wouldn't be available to you if you were counsel in the case . . .

I suppose it could be useful in a case for malpractice against your own counsel.

I didn't say she was nuts, only that she attached an inappropriate level of seriousness to it.

Hmmm, you are a lawyer. Trying to talk this into a new subject and all.

The context of the conversation was about trekkies(ers) who were not capable of telling the difference between reality and fiction.

What is appropriate in a courtroom, is irrelevant to the topic.

But suffice it to say, she is no more insane than Captain Quirk, for what that's worth.

This from the man who named his KIDS after Star Trek characters?????

But I never made them dress like that as a lifestyle. Ok, James had a Starfleet uniform he came home in, but he only wore that a few times after that. Hey- this isn't about me, it's about that crazy lady.
LOL!

I'm sorry but that's just hilarious.

If you're not crazy, neither is she. Let's just leave it at that.

I don't see how it's irrelevant if it's the very behavior which made her noteworthy to begin with.

I'm really late... but did anyone else notice the fake handheld going on?

The first bit of cross-coverage in the bar, the camera was jerky as hell. It looked like they had it on sticks and were attempting to mimic the drifting of handheld, but it was distracting as HELL. So to the point that I missed part of the story.

It might be a couple more years before we see another Star Trek.

J.J. said he will direct another one but he wants to do some other projects first.

I'm bummed out, I wanted to see Star Trek next summer and not 2011 or 2012.

I noticed it, more than once.

I think handheld was overdone in Star Trek, at points I felt like I was watching Cloverfield.

Finally just saw it. Before I start I should mentioned that I'm a huge fan of TOS -- so much so that I didn't watch TNG for the first few seasons.

My wife (a TNG fan) refused to watch this movie because "It's not Star Trek".

My impressions of this film is that it's fun yet stupid. Unbelievably stupid. Obviously the filmmakers just didn't care to do more than string along a series of great CG and action sequences. After all, they knew they had a captive audience with all the fans of the previous films and shows.

The sad thing is that it could have quite easily have been made good by paying a little more attention on the script, and thinking a little harder about having things make sense. Instead the film was a constant serious of "Huh?"s while I try to figure out thing like where are all the other starships (you'd think they'd recall just a few back to Earth), why Earth had no warning, why they're suddenly able to teleport half-way across a solar-system (which would negate the need for starships or space-travel at all), etc. etc.

Probably the worse thing though is the concept that time has changed so that the old Spock's timeline (the one we grew up with from the 60's to the 00's) is now completely garbaged -- what's the point of watching the reruns on TV now if we know that it's all for nothing when this new -- and retarded -- timeline done by people who aren't even fans trumps it?

This is an alarming issue I've noticed over the past year of watching new films. Audiences are becoming so unsophisticated that they will accept any story flaw or fault as long as it's supported by great visuals -- eye-candy to distract from the gaping logic and story flaws. It used to be that the filmmakers at least tried to make their films logically coherent, but now they just don't care.

My theory for this is that the average IQ of audiences have dropped to the level where they're just too slow to notice things like plot and story logic, too captivated by the glitz and flashing lights to even have it register in their brains. If you look at IQ distribution mapped along a bell-curve, filmmakers used to shoot for the top end of the curve (the reviewers), now they aim for the middle generate more revenue from the masses of movie-going "stupids". I hope this stops because as much as I like to have my brain numbed and to be pulled into the illusion of the film, films are becoming too stupid, even for me.

I don't know whats more annoying; movies with glaring story flaws or the fact that whenever I point them out someone is there to chastise me and say "awwww, can't you just let it go? It's just a movie." No, I can't. I can only suspend my disbelief so much. When it borders on insulting my intelligence I have to speak up. And, there are always people there to tell me that it's just a movie.

it won't stop. that's where they make all the big bucks. where there is money, it will never, ever end. you just have to pray for those few crown jewels every year. that's why spring/summer are your movies for the masses (the no brainer films that you watch without needing to think) ie ur blockbusters

and you'll have your fall and winter where you'll have much richer films. it's been that way for a really long time, i guess we are all just starting to get sick of it.

in all defense though i've been a treky since i was a little kid, and i think the new one did a lot of things to open up and start a new generation of fans and did some things to appease the older fans. face it, star trek was a majorly dying series, and they've been beating the dead horse with the films for a long time now. if anything it took something like this to keep it alive.

on the bright side, at least we'll always have pixar?

There's suspending your disbelief, and then there's dragging it out behind the barn and shooting it between the eyes.

Great movie saw it last night , for a moment there I thought Michael Bay directed it, flare after flare :) .but honestly I enjoyed immensely .It's the best movie I've seen for 09 .

Ha ha, at least I'm not alone:

Look at #7
http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2009/09/top-10-unanswered-questions-in-geeky-movies/

7. Star Trek (the 2009 movie): Old Spock biding his time - Kirk gets marooned on the ice planet by Young Spock, and Old Spock saves his life. Then Old Spock tells Kirk that there’s a Starfleet outpost nearby, and they trudge through the snow to get there. Now, Old Spock was marooned there a while before by Nero, and he knew that Nero was going to try to destroy Vulcan. So why didn’t he seek out this Starfleet outpost he knew about until after Kirk arrived? Don’t you think that maybe it would’ve been a smart idea to warn Starfleet that someone was about to try to destroy Vulcan, and, oh, by the way, he’s from the future?

Actually, a couple of those are pretty good.

I'd probably think of it more as being undead.

There's something to be said for just letting it go, or at least letting it lie fallow for 10 years or so, if not more.

if there is money to be made, they will never let it go. case in point, look at all the remakes and forced sequels that come out, and spoof movies. they always turn a profit, and thus they'll beat the dead horse to a pulp, eat it, then beat themselves to a pulp just cause they can.

Thank you. I'm a pretty dumb guy, so when I see a plot hole it's got to be mighty big.

I rewatched the two new 007 films yesterday, and that's a good example of a reboot done right. Sticks to the format but not religiously, smartly updated to the times, not afraid to be complicated and lose the stupid viewers (who'd most likely be distracted by the action scenes anyway). Still plenty of dumb action scenes (which we all like) -- but not too dumb.

I also rewatched the new Star Trek, and found that I still liked the lens flares -- added a very futuristic feel. I think for this sort of film they're well used. The casting and acting was excellent, except for Scotty (too funny), and the old geezer who played the old Spock. Jeez, they could of at least got someone who knew the character. (kidding...) The entire 12-year-old Kirk scene is clumsy and unnecessary -- we see that Kirk is a sh-thead in the bar scene. The young Spock scene is good though. Spock in general is very well acted. I like the f-ck-you brow-raise he gives the elders when he rejects going to the academy. Oh, and half the Enterprise's bridge-crew is from Iowa? Waaaay too much coincidence unless they're planning on bringing Q in for the next episode.

Probably the saddest thing is that there's A LOT of better stories that could have been used. I've read all of the Star Trek books (and even comics although I'm not a comic-book reader), and there is a lot of excellent material in there about how each of the characters ended up on the Enterprise. What a waste.
