Umm... what was the question? Here's JJ's answer to his obsession with unexplained mystery, his TED talk. Just be forewarned it's like listening to a 9 year old give a book report after drinking five mountain dew's--

I think TMP was one of the best of the films ever made.
There are times where it gets a little old, but with the new effects in the extended cut I think it is great.
What don't you like about it?
Well bro, at least we can agree on Breaking Bad.![]()
I'm glad you liked the opening sequence. I thought it was amazing, and you hit on some good points. (space/vacuum issue)
For all the die-hard Trek fans who feel majorly let down, remember this: You didn't get Jar Jar Binks. 10 years later, I'm still bummed.
This movie was a turd-burger, hold the mayo. Sorry, a turd-burger, hold the mayo, but extra lens-flares, please.

Remember how disappointing TMP was? Remember how much better WOK turned out to be?
Let's hope for a similar relationship between this and the next one.
Mostly the fact that it's horribly paced. And captures little to none of what made Star Trek fun. And (with the exception of the major hardware) really poor, flat art direction (particularly with regard to costuming; Dr. Dentons in space, etc).

You know what, I honestly don't even care if they make a sequel, and it has nothing to do with the quality of the film. Does the world really need more Star Trek? I'm sure many people feel it does, but I think that well has been wrung pretty dry. That said, I'm sure I'll go see the inevitable follow up.
It was.The next one COULD be awesome. But all the hype ("OHMYGOD!!! IT'S JJ ABRAMS!!!!") said this one was going to be the most sublime Trek experience ever.
Not sure about that. For me it all lies in the script.Going around the 'net, I'm seeing a theme emerging . . .
This one could have been better, but the next one's gonna be awesome!!
Does anyone else get the impression, given the low budget and new cast, that the heads didn't have complete confidence in it and wanted to test the waters first before throwing the big bucks at it?

I do. I still see this as an introductory test.
Introducing a new cast, new ideas, new ship. Getting the introductory stuff out of the way by giving some background history on the characters, testing audience responses, before moving on to the bigger stuff, if it works.
Remember there is a new generation of kids out there that may never have seen Star Trek or maybe thought it was too lame, out dated, couldn't relate.
I think it worked overall and now they can pump it up for the next one and put a few more bucks behind it. I'm not too critical on this first release, just as the first original Captain Pike episode was a wash. Anyways they should give the cast another shot at a dedicated story and put a few more dollars behind it.
I can't see why not.
