Star Trek

Oh, come on. It was a fun ride. But it's no more Oscar-worthy than any Michael Bay flick, which at times are also fun rides.

It'll be nominated, I didn't say win. As I siad not sure what categories it would be nominated for but I'm sure Batutta is correct about it being something technical.

No joke

Brandon, is there anything that you *don't* like...? :)

That's how I felt; casting and performances were darned good, story so-so to not-so-great, and art direction just amateurish. Overall a win, but not a shut-out.

No Oscars imo. Even as great and flawless as the VFX were, barring one or two minor sub-contracted shots, they were not, imo, Oscar worthy. Standard fare(from hollywood). Please point out the Oscar winning shots for me.

Casting? Nope. No great acting here.

Directing? Hmmm. It was good but I don't see an Oscar.

Music score? Well, they work with what they have. I didn't hear anything outstanding.

No Oscar here. I believe the Oscar is 'supposed' to be for an outstanding achievement in a given area. The key word here is 'outstanding'.
There is no Oscar for best 'Entertainment', well, that I know of. I hope not.

Hopefully one aspires to achieve both, no? Isn't that where the 'outstanding achievement award' comes in? Well... ideally...

Did anyone here read the prequel comic book?

It made the story SO much better, but sadly not much of it made it into the film :(

Going to have to disagree with you about the effects, I thought they were spectacular! All of them.

Hey Brandon. The VFX were outstanding, I agree, I wasn't putting them down, sorry. I don't feel they met the Oscar bar as far as achievement goes however. Well, long story, so, yeah, the FX were some of the best I've seen for sure. I'm just a little hesitant on handing out the Oscars, more or less. :)

I heard this pointed out while discussing logic gaps and weirdness in the story, with friends; Oh, it's not a gap, they addressed that in the comic book.

Well, sorry, but a screenplay that depends upon my having read some other separate bit of media to fill in holes in plot, story and logic is quite frankly crap writing. If it ain't in the script, and it ain't on the screen, then it ain't in the story.

I mean, *think* about it - would Casablance be a great (or even good) film, if you had to read a comic book before viewing, in order to understand Rick's relationship with Ilsa, or Casblanca's significance? I should think a screenwriter would be ashamed, to have to admit that his script doesn't really work until you read some other chunk of material, that someone else created, so that things make sense.

*edit*

And, the VFX work was competent. No more, no less - and you should certainly expect no less, when paying ILM prices for the work...

...technical achievement and visual-effects achievement awards for this year will be going to Avatar. No other contenders yet, really. Certainly not Trek, tasty as the VFX work certainly was.

Not shooting in screamingly obvious present-day industrial plants which feel nothing like any kind of craft, would be a start...and sets that look and feel at least a tiny bit consistent, rather than a grab-bag of disparate locations would be a good idea, too...perhaps choosing interior locations that aren't very obviously larger than the entire ship is, on the outside, might help...and maybe dressing up the propane-powered forklifts just the *tiniest* bit to read as future hardware (lots of things, really) couldn't hurt...

...you *really* prefer inside-of-a-beer-plant-basement as a look for a starship, to anything previously designed for Trek...?

Well, it's true that tastes legitimately differ.

Dammit Sad Max, you do this stuff for a living, how could I ever win an argument with you?

Seriously, I can't wait to see Star Trek again, I gotta take note of this brewery comparison. I thought the engine room looked cool, but obviously I'm not as harsh a critic. Just a casual fan, not a Trekkie/Trekker. I also loved the Apple/futuristic look of the bridge. Just my opinion.

I know the core Trek people are gonna take issue with this film but for me, it was a fun ride*.

* BTW, I hated the last Indiana Jones movie, that was not a fun ride. Just thought I'd throw that in there for no apparent reason.

Same way as anyone, by being right when I'm wrong. My profession doesn't make me an authority on people's tastes, and a lot of the judgment is a matter of taste.

If they'd been aiming for 'brewery,' it would have been brilliant. Since they were aiming for 'starship interior...' it was kind of the opposite of brilliant.

Some day maybe I'll have the opportunity to ask Scott C. what the hell happened. My money's already on budgetary restrictions.

There is not a whole lot to chose from this year.

For VFX

Transformers 2, Star Trek, Avatar, what else VFX wise will be out for 2009?

Maybe the Avengers, but that won't likely be out till next year, maybe 2011? Iron Man 2 maybe... lots of good comic book stuff supposed to be out soon.

Transformers 2 might be a big contender. Depending on how they do. ILM and DD are working like crazy. Around 60 robots will be making their rounds through the film. Terminator might have some great effects work - dunno about oscar worthy though.

But you guys are seeing a lot more than I did. Only thing that annoyed me was the incessant camera movement. Every couple seconds the camera would jerk slightly. And the flares that were way to common.

None of those will be out for 2009. Iron Man II is 2010 & please don't say J.I. Joe.

You guys do know it actually was a brewery as per JJ's interview on Leno.

As for the effects, I thought they were all special :)

Er ... if you somehow gleaned from my comment that I was suggesting that because it was actually a brewery that made it somehow brilliant, not so much. I was actually trying to support your assertion that it looked more like a brewery than a star ship by pointing out the fact that it was an actual brewery. A Budweiser brewery in fact, hence the product placement in the bar scene.

And yes per JJ on Leno it was for budgetary reasons. "we wanted to build this whole intricate engine room but it was so expensive and then we toured this brewery and it was immaculate" (approximate quote)
