Star Trek

And the refitted Enterprise; one of the most beautiful cinematic spacecraft ever.

The exterior, anyway. Joe J's interiors for Wrath of Khan were the definitive interior design, so far as I'm concerned...

I'm hearing the new blu-rays of the films are having image quality issues (too much noise reduction), but that thankfully Wrath of Khan fares the best out of the lot. Too bad they are only selling them in boxed sets.

So maybe, with the next film, they'll get a truly good script, radically redo the production design, take it all more seriously, and come up with a grand-slam home run.

But then they may risk wives not loving that film as much as they do this one. :)

Man, you must have REALLY high expectations. This film was pretty close to a grand slam in my book. I don't see how they can really get much better in terms of production design, everything looked great! (Plot as I mentioned earlier, I'm willing to suspend my disbelief...this is a story involving spaceships, aliens and time travel....is it really a shocker when Kirk runs into old Spock's cave?)

I mean, I think the cast and crew put out a really good film and should be very proud of themselves. Simple as that.

But by all means, continue to dissect, because quite honestly it does make a pretty interesting thread.

You know, I actually think TMP gets a bad rap. I'm not saying it's my favorite at all, but the musical score alone makes it watchable for me. And it has a real sense of the grandeur and scale of space, something I wish the new movie had more of. I don't hate it. I don't hate the new film either. I'll probably watch it again. I just wish it were better.

I agree, TMP has a bad reputation that I don't think it really deserves. I remember that a co-worker went to see it opening weekend, and when I asked her about it, she said "It's really just a two-hour 'Star Trek'." Meaning, it basically just as good as an average ST episode, nothing more. Except much better special effects...

The only problems that I had (and still have) with TMP are: 1) the way it overdoes the introduction of the new Enterprise--it just goes on... and on... and on...; and 2) the early part of the film has way too much of a "reunion" feel to it, concentrating on the actors/characters/settings as icons, practically worshipping them, instead of just getting down to telling the story. To be fair, that's a very common problem with movies and TV shows that pick things up after a long hiatus. But on the other hand, that doesn't mean it *should* be like that.

But aside from all that, I thought TMP was a good, entertaining film, and it still holds up.

Expect the next one to be even more hip, shiek & fun.

One thing I can assure you guys is they will never go back to the old serious boring nerd type Trek. Ok, let the hate emails begin :)

I hope they certainly don't go back to the post original series type Trek. One thing I remarked when watching the remastered original series episodes recently was how sexy the original 60's Trek was in comparison to the new stuff, which seemed neutered by comparison. I'm glad they injected some of that testosterone back in. Just balance it with some smarts and I'm good.

I enjoyed it. After some introductory flash they introduced the characters in typical novel fashion which I felt explored a little deeper into who the main characters were. The additional background on Christopher Pike, Kirks Dad, Spock's issues and the other main crew members I think was pretty good and respectful to Roddenberry and the series.

I think they did a great job in introducing the trek universe to the new generation . I thought it rocked pretty good myself.

The ananmoprphic flares were a tad on the kill-me-to-death side though.

The biggest problems I had with it, were the hair, the costumes, and the white plastic Enterprise. Other than that, I liked it.

Not shooting in screamingly obvious present-day industrial plants which feel nothing like any kind of craft, would be a start...and sets that look and feel at least a tiny bit consistent, rather than a grab-bag of disparate locations would be a good idea, too...perhaps choosing interior locations that aren't very obviously larger than the entire ship is, on the outside, might help...and maybe dressing up the propane-powered forklifts just the *tiniest* bit to read as future hardware (lots of things, really) couldn't hurt...

...you *really* prefer inside-of-a-beer-plant-basement as a look for a starship, to anything previously designed for Trek...?

Well, it's true that tastes legitimately differ.

This just sounds like "it's sci-fi! It doesn't have to make sense!"

Many doors are now open for more smarts in the next one and they will tap into it (I have inside knowledge, don't ask). It'll be more tentpoled in a fun, smart, sexy, shiek way.

Remember, Roberto and Alex weren't that excited about writing the script and it took Paramount's Production President about a year to convince J.J. to direct it (thank god he did). There is already Oscar buzz going around town, not sure what category it's for.

Now they are SUPER excited about the next one and are VERY educated on Star Trek, it'll only get better and this is the best reviewed movie of the year!

Ohh yea, way bigger budget to.

I won't be voting for Trek for any of the categories in which *I* vote...aside from VFX I can't even guess in what categories it would be nominated.

...alas a lot of producers and writers still seem to regard 'sci fi' as the retard bastard offspring of lowbrow and who-cares, and bend their efforts accordingly.

If this wins an Oscar for anything other than technical categories I'll eat my shoe.

I'm sure that's what the buzz is for, I didn't ask. There could be a few categories outside of that but no I'm not talking about best picture, that'll go to some artsy film.

If there is a catagory for best casting I'm sure it'll be nominated for that with FX and a few others.

There is no category for casting. I guess they could make up a one-off special award for best ensemble, but that seems like a stretch.
