Star Trek

No you didn't. That actually made me sad, as I love the original soundtrack and felt a little cheated by how little there seemed to be in it. I mean come on, how do you reveal the Enterprise (in much the same way it was done in TMP) and not have that cue come up?!?

saw it. i had fun. but all the highlights seemed to be references to the original films or series. everything that came from jj and company didn't strike me as all that compelling. i most enjoyed karl urban's tribute performance to deforrest kelley.

I was not a huge fan of the original but had seen all the films and the many of the spin offs. I surprisingly knew enough to love the all the references. (I started the claps for the transporter scene). Also the reference to the greenchick Kirk made out with in the old school version was hilarious. I always thought that was funny because it was like she's a basic hottie but green. LOL.

Simon Pegg was FANTASTIC! :)

I thought the casting was the best part of the movie.

Yes. Awesome cast. I love Simon Peg's work. He was great in "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz" and now in this. People gave massive applause when they saw him. And Leonard Nimoy got some props too. I loved seeing just how big the ship was.

My friend is an Alias fan and a huge fan of J. J. Abrams and she wanted to see how he would pull it off. Overall making it a time travel story was a smart move. I'm noticing people moving to save the longevity of classic characters such as Spiderman recently giving up his marriage to Mephisto to save his Aunt May (Spider-man comic book).

After Effects geeks/aficionados take note that Andrew Kramer did the credit animations and they rock.

That's tight dude. I'll send him a shout out right now.

This was one of those details that made me groan. Kirk f-ing a green chick is great, but did she have to talk like any actress you'd see on the Hills? She's an alien! She didn't grow up in the O.C.! It was this kind of dumb crap that cheapened the movie for me.

But it's Kirk in a Green chick. I mean it was something people cracked on in the original so why would it be taken so serious now. I thought her speaking that way was great as it was supposed to be funny. And while she was an alien, she was one that had been obviously associating with humans (specifically human men, LOL) for quite sometime. For all we know she may be half human in this. But again it was just a nod. Just enough to get a clap and a giggle from the audience. I know some people take Star Trek very seriously but I found the little things like this to be quite nice, because it seemed like the writers actually knew the source material and actually gave a damn about the fans, unlike some of the comic book films where you go "huh". (Catwoman or Superman Returns ring any bells).

I enjoyed this, with a lot of reservations. I think JJ is a good director but I still detected a faint TV odor lingering over the whole affair. Part of it is just his visual sensibility. He favors close ups a little too much and doesn't open things up enough, and as an action filmmaker he is workmanlike at best. He makes things move really fast in a kinetic way, but he doesn't have that thing that makes for a great action director, an understanding of how to build suspense within a setpiece.

I agree somewhat here. But overall I liked the action. Even the spaceship dogfights which I've never really been a fan of even in Star Wars. The big irony here is I had made NO plans to see this film. A friend of mine was going with her friends and asked if I wanted to see it with them. I said yes and I'm glad I did.

By the way, anyone see this: http://www.startreknewvoyages.com/

It was just stupid and took me out of the film. It's not worth it to make a dumb joke for that, when the scene could have functioned just fine without it, and been just as amusing. It's the kind of play to the cheap seats attitude in the screenwriting that kept the film from being great for me. I'm not saying there shouldn't have been humor. It should just make sense in the world they are portraying and not only as a pop culture in-joke. This for me, is why Dreamworks has never made a classic Animated film, and Pixar has made several. Pixar doesn't go for cheap pop culture jokes at the expense of the reality they are weaving.

If you want a perfect example of the difference between kinetic noise, and suspenseful action, contrast the Death Star run in the fist Star Wars, against any of the space battles in the prequels. The Death Star run is easy to follow, builds in suspense, with characters executing a clear plan of action that escalates in tension. The prequels is just a lot of explosions and ships flying around chaotically. Star Trek was better but could have taken the time to build some tension. A rollercoaster is the most frightening as you're going up the hill, not down it.

Just saw it...thought it was really fun...a little dumb at times, but i liked it. I think it was totaly refreshing as far as the franchise goes. I love that they stayed out of the star trek "tunnel" hallways and i love how much scale there was in terms of the size of the machinery/interior of the ship. It had so much scope. This film felt much more realistic then any other ST film. It felt like there was real danger.

The thing about the franchise as a whole is it felt so flat/tired after the first 3-4 movies...i love that this cast was entirly fresh and not from the tv series, and because of that you had to rediscover who they were...and because of a certain plot device you had to rethink what could or could no happen.

I loved the look of the film the lens flares were a little over the top. But in general the movie looked great, i loved the desing of the interior, felt like it was designed by apple. I thought it was smart to ground some of the other sets to real life and not over design EVERYTHING, they went through some areas that looked like they could have been any refinery/werehouse that might exist today...not everything has to be shiney new. Nice mix of present day/modern/future architecture and product design.

anyway, thats my take...

oh and ohura is hot.

I enjoyed the film, but I really didn't like the villain. His actions were properly villainous, but his motivations didn't make any sense. He was pretty much just a lunatic.

I jjust came....this movie was epic, awesome and something to seriously respect as a stand alone film. The story concept of the reboot was phenomenal, and I really enjoyed the evoluton of the characters in such a short span of time. I'll drop it a 5 out of 5 bomb for being a great summer feature that stands on its own legs.

Now back to my own film endeavors.

Did any Trekkies get the fencing comments? That was in reference to an old rare Trek tv episode that only die hard Trekkies would know.

Not a huge fan of JJ's shooting style (too many CU's) but still worked for me.

I disagree. Some people chalk it up to being a tv thing and maybe it's true, but I prefer mediums and CUs to the almost overuse of wides I'm seeing these days. A lot people are throwing up unmotivated wides that show nothing, or mundane things, especially in indie projects where they don't even have the locations or production design for it. I don't need a super wide of some kid standing in front out a house like it's an epic house, why should I care? I'd rather see the kid, a lot of times these days I find myself almost waiting for CUs so I can figure out who the hell I'm watching and what they look like. I want to feel personal with my actors.

Me too. I mean, I'm not a core-Trek fan, but I do remember that and I was laughing my ass off when he said, "Fencing."

On that note, how insane was that whole parachute scene?

John Cho was great as Sulu.

Guess I'm a die hard then...That's from Naked Time, right, where everyone goes crazy and horny? Didn't they revisit that in The Next Generation?...That shot of Sulu fencing was shown a lot on TV when Takei came out of the closet (get it, swordfighting?).
