Star Trek

Actually, it was: http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/scans/mechanics/eo3.jpg :) Probably just about impossible to see in the show's SFX footage, though...

That's not the original filming model. That's probably Greg Jein's model built for DS9's "Trials and Tribble-ations."

The nacelle front caps never looked like that on the filming model. And look at the underside edge of the saucer -- it's flattened, like a toilet bowl -- again, like Jein's model, but not the original filming model.

Also, in this pic:

The mounting connection is made on the port side of the secondary hull -- and that side is finished, with markings. The port side of the original model never was, and still isn't. In fact, there's cabling and blocks on that side.

This model is made from vacuformed plastic; you can tell in the finishing details. The original model was made of wood and rolled steel.

And, it's too small -- the original model was 11 feet. Look at the step ladder in that pic for scale.

There are some original shots which make that area of the hull appear darker, but it was never colored like that. The original model is on display at the Smithsonian, and has that reddish ring which was painted there during a restoration (along with a lot of non-authentic harsh weathering), so that's probably why Jein put it on his. But there was never a metallic copper ring there and still isn't.

Well, I'm not qualified to argue with you about which model is which, cause damn if I can tell 'em apart. :) But, having just fast-forwarded through a couple of TOS episodes, I see a lot of shots where it looks like the ring could be there, and a few where it doesn't, so I don't know what the heck to think.

Except that I think the copper ring is an improvement... :D

Which brings us back to the discussion of why couldn't JJ Abrams be happy with this sort of subtle detail improvement and not go all Gabe Koerner on us with the damn thing...

At any rate, saw the new trailer on the big screen in front of Watchmen today, and it really gives me a lot more hope that Abrams will get this right, on the large scale, enough to make me at least temporarily forget stupid stuff like Kirk's 2009 Yamaha motorcycle and building the Enterprise on the ground...

I don't care what anybody says.......kidding. Still, I am so ready to see this movie. I'm not a trekkie but Star Trek used to be my favorite re-run TV show when we first came to the good old U.S. of A. Can't wait to see who Leonard Nimoy will be.

I just hope JJ Abram will take the Enterprise to where no other Star Trek directors have gone.

I'm way into Star Trek and all my friends who are not know it.

It is funny to see how their reactions to the movie have changed since it was first announced to now after the latest trailer. People who actually very much dislike Trek are pretty excited to go see it.

Growing up it was just a cool rerun to watch on TV. I thought the movies were ok (was more of a Star Wars fan) but these trailers tell me that this new franchise is going to be bigger than anything we've seen. So I'll probably be first in line to go see it.

I would not be surprise if they make over $50 million on opening weekend and part of that 50 mil is my own hard-earned 10 bucks... :)

I have confidence that Mr. Abrams will boldly take the Enterprise to where no other Star Trek directors have gone before. I anticipate a great opening that will lead to a great story of the Enterprise and concluded with a satisfying ending.

I have never been into Star Trek either but I have followed the production of this movie for a long time. I even have a whole box of shirts for it that say "Stardate 12-25-08" the original release date before they changed it to May 8, 2009.

I'd bet it does around $100 million opening weekend (domestic). Most people in foreign countries do NOT know what Star Trek is so they are aggressively running heavy marketing campaigns overseas, great interest has been stirred up so it could easily do $500+ million total in just overseas BO. I'd bet all foreign, domestic BO and dvd sales it grosses over $1.2 bllion but you never know so we will see.

I'm not sure if the hard core Trekkies will like it because it is more mainstream and they like to be "purest". At least thier wifes and girlfriends will like it and no longer give them so much crap for thier love of Trek.

J.J. is a very "smart" story teller but has to tell a story that sells to cover the $150+ million budget.

It took a lot of convincing from Paramounts Production President to get J.J. to direct it but now everyone is so glad he did, not many other directors could pull it off like this if any.

If Trekkies do like it they are going to love the next one they are working on right now.

Just wait!

I was sold on this film the first time I saw the "Under Construction" teaser. I wouldn't be surprise if opening weekend reaches $100 million either. For sure, Paramount will make their $150 mil back within a week if not less. I only wish I have $10 million to invest in this movie instead of scrambling and shelling out 10 bucks to see it. :)

I hope they included the famous opening narations of James T. Kirk somewhere...at least partially. I had a feeling they may...to satisfy hardcare Trekkies. I would.

I dread the packed crowd with everyone else eating their pop corns and sipping their sodas noisily but...oh well.

Oh yea, the Under Construction teaser. J.J. first added that to the Cloverfield film prints.

I liked it because you didn't know what it was until the Star Trek music played in the last few seconds then people got interested. No name, no info just a few seconds of music over the guys welding on the Enterprise.

Paramount will no doubt make some serious money this summer with Trek, Transformers 2 and a few others coming out.

I think Star Trek is going to do gangbusters theatrically. With the bad economy and an all around depressing state of affairs everywhere, I think people will really dig a fun film that posits an optimistic view of the future. Plus JJ Abrams by name alone will probably bring in a good number of people.

Not so sure about Terminator Salvation. I just don't see it doing well, with it coming out a couple weeks after Star Trek and it being a much darker and pessimistic kind of film. I am looking forward to it though, even without James Cameron at the helm. Plus, there is another big budget robot action movie coming out this summer, which doesn't bode well for a Terminator film.

Uh, no, it will make a gazillion dollars. You'd be hard pressed to find many franchises with as much name recognition. Unless the movie is utterly horrible, but that never stopped a film from making money before.
