Star Trek

You never know, lot's of people said that about the Dark Night. Actually there was a point in pre production the studio thought about cancelling it.

Annalist are saying this is going to be a record BO summer.

I don't have as much feelings of anticipation as Star Trek but Terminator: Salvation is definitely on my top list of great action films to see. I'm pretty sure it will do well. Not too impress with McG's directions but I hope he suprises me with this one.

That would've ranked right up there with Universal passing on Star Wars and Columbia passing on E.T.!

Uh, no, it will make a gazillion dollars. You'd be hard pressed to find many franchises with as much name recognition. Unless the movie is utterly horrible, but that never stopped a film from making money before.

I don't mean to say it will flop. I'm sure it will make some profit, but I don't see it making 800 million to 1 billion worldwide, which is pretty much the current standard of profitable success for these big budget summer tentpole films. Of course, they will make money on tie-ins like toys and video games, and later on DVD.

It definitely has better chances coming out a month before Transformers 2. Now if Star Trek had released in December 2008 like they originally planned, then Terminator Salvation would have an open window to take May. I'm looking forward to both, not so much Transformers 2 though. First one was fun but could've been so much more.

I'm just glad sci-fi films are making a bit of a comeback in the arena of bigger budgeted and event films. This year we've got Star Trek, Transformers 2, Moon, Terminator Salvation, and in December there will be Avatar.

I actually think Star Trek has the most hurdles to overcome for the moviegoing public. The Star Trek name has a built in dork factor that still may keep some people from the theater. And then you have an unknown actor taking on an iconic lead role. From all the buzz I've heard though JJ has knocked it out of the park, which improves its chances, and they sure are promoting it like crazy. But I still think it's the least sure thing of the bunch between it, Terminator and Transformers 2.

I agree with you Batutta but I think word of mouth will push it over the hump into the mainstream audience within a couple days. Or atleast to the people who are writting it off as a nerd movie.

I just got set up with a private screening for Star Trek in glorious IMAX here in KC for my birthday. They said the film print will arive today and I can see it today but my schedule won't let me see it until next week. Damn, but atleast I get to be one of the first people in KC to see it before it opens and in IMAX.

I'll let you guys know what I think from a non Trekkie POV. I have only seen scenes and not the complete scored movie.

Can't wait!

You must know people in high places. Awesome.

Personally, with this kind of a film, I prefer to be surprise...good or bad.

Those are some good points, and I was thinking the same thing until more recently. Don't get me wrong, I am excited for both Star Trek and Terminator Salvation, but to me the key factors are:

1. Star Trek is already getting insanely good word of mouth from early screenings.
2. JJ Abrams. Everybody and his brother seems to love just about anything this guy touches.
3. It has the dork factor, but then again so did Spiderman, X-men, Lord of the Rings, etc... plus it is an optimistic science fiction adventure film coming out during a time of real turmoil. Star Wars was sorta in that position in 1977, and was an optimistic film that really stood out in a very cynical time. Not that I think this will be as successful as Star Wars was back then, but I think there are some parallels to both films and their release.
4. Besides Wolverine, it is the first big movie release of the May to August summer movie season. That alone is a huge advantage. Iron Man had this same advantage when it was released last May. And from what I've read so far, Star Trek has a ton more buzz than Wolverine.

Of course, if this Swine Flu scare really heats over the next week and a half, then that could put the brakes on it having a huge opening weekend. If that happened, Hollywood would declare it a flop and in a sense, somewhat help to condemn it to a possible failure.

CNN just said the CDC is saying a swine flu pandimin is immenent (at phase 5 now, second highest level). Curious if this is going to effect the summer BO sales, actually it will effect it but by how much? We now have a couple confirmed cases here in Kansas (of all places).

Every time that animated bimbo from Esurance urges me to not miss Star Trek, I consider missing it completely just a little more. :Drogar-Angry(DBG):

I don't think I've even seen that ad yet. Weird.

I will say one thing, there were some clips released the other day:

And I am just not buying the dude playing Kirk. Maybe I'm prematurely judging, probably, but from all I've seen so far, there is just no way that anyone can fill the Shat's shoes. Shatner freaking owned James T. Kirk, and I think that these clips really show that. No offense to the actor playing Kirk in the new film. It is a nearly impossible role to step into, and anyone that goes into it full hog and tries to make it work I respect. I still want to see it but this seems to be the biggest thing that I would suspect to not work for fans of the original series/films. New fans might not give a toot.

As for Spock, the previews didn't really show enough, but the guy from Heroes playing young Spock looks so much like Nimoy that he already has an advantage. Plus, with Spock you're got the Vulcan ears and bowl shaped haircut which can work to their advantage. Spock was less recognizable as Nimoy as Kirk WAS Shatner.

The thing that makes me all warm and fuzzy inside is that it is great to see Star Trek back in the limelight and getting all this positive buzz. I'm sure new fans will be made out of this film. They'll want to go and see the old stuff and will see Shatner, Nimoy, and Deforest Kelly as Kirk, Spock, and Bones in the original form.

This pic of the Star Trek LA premiere was taken about 30 min ago this evening.

There is now a case of swine flu in Missouri about 3 miles from the theater I'm going to see it in. I'm going anyway, actually going to meet a lady friend in an hour that got back from Cancun today. This sucks, hope it doesn't stop people from going to see it. Dosen't bother me a bit.

My friend hounded me to see a star trek film, I saw Khan, I liked it, didn't love it, it was...it was nice. For me the trek stuff was too sterile, too inclusive, bunch of guys in pajamas staring at a big tv.

With that said, JJ did the impossible and I'm actually going to pay to see a star trek movie!

Who would have ever thought it would turn into this? Amazing!!! Glad to see them take this kind of risk! Even if Trekkies don't like it you have to give them credit for thier effort.

BTW J.J. hit a freakin home run out of the park on this one!

Ps Wait tell the next one...

FYI put in a request 1 year ago to see a remake of Lost Boys.................................
