Star Trek

Believe me, I was really going for M. Scott, I only thought it would be fitting considering my first born is James Tiberius :) If we had a girl, she would have been Catherine Janeway.

My daughter was born in 1969, luckily she's not named Sunshine or Moonbeam.

But, still, this is one old fanboy who's waiting to see the Enterprise go into warp again.

I'm just going to come out and say it... after viewing the new trailer, something just seems off. I don't know exactly what. It looks like Star Trek, but it just doesn't feel right. Almost like it is trying too hard to be hip and youthful. I always liked that in Star Trek the main characters were older mature adults. Maybe it is just that the trailer doesn't show enough, plus being a bootleg maybe I'm judging prematurely. The sports car segment sticks out like a sore thumb from the rest of the universe. The voice-over sounded odd. "Is this a music video" ran through my mind. I like all the anamorphic lens flares. Of course, that alone doesn't determine a film's quality.

The way that the intro plays out, it feels pretentious, a bit like the first trailer for Batman Begins where they tried to hide the fact that it was a Batman movie, only to reveal it later in the trailer. I get the feeling when they do that it is because they feel they are above the material and only they can bring it up to their level of genius. What really scares me is that supposedly JJ Abrams has said that he wants to inject some Star Wars qualities into this. Not sure if that is a good idea. The teaser trailer that came out awhile ago was great. I just went from extremely excited to see this to worried that this is not going to work for me, or most Trek fans.

This feels like Star Trek for the masses. I'm sure casual moviegoers and some Star Trek fans will be fine with it. Hard-core Trek fans though? I don't know. Hopefully it all works when it finally comes out.

I'll bet this is the highest grossing Trek movie ever! After all thats what it's about, the money.

Seems a bit flashy, but if JJ Abrams does for this what he did for MI3, then I can't wait.

Looks like Star Trek with grit...

This actually doesn't look too bad (me not being a Trekkie)

But the 12 year old driving the sports car and jumping out unscathed is leaving me rolling my eyes.

+1

It doesn't feel like Trek at all. I just watched Wrath of Kahn last night, and I'm watching Undiscovered Country tonight. Those are Trek movies, this seems like some wierd transformers thing.

I hope I'm completely wrong, and there is actual substance and it's true to the original heart of the characters and not just a bunch of CGI space battles. Imagine this compared with TMP (IMO, the truest Trek movie to date). Flash, bang, and I'm not seeing any real substance.
