...I'm planning on purchasing an Canon A1 or FX1 in the future. I have a bunch of questions for you guys. Right now I'm running on the standard 512 of memory which is actually good for editing SD movies 30 minutes and under (on FCX3) but...

1. For shooting HDV how many gigs of memory are you guys using?

2. What brands of memory are you using?

3. Where did you buy it from?

4. How much did you pay for the upgrade? (Best deals).

5. Besides the computer, camera and software, whatelse (if anything) will I need to aquire HDV from the FX1 or the Canon?

with a macbook, you need to max out your RAM...so get 2 1gb sticks

the best places to get good RAM for macs is crucial.com, datamem.com, macsales.com

Thank you. I actually know about OCW, those are some good prices. How is the memory working in your machine (if you have one) and where did you buy it?

I don't have a macbook, but I've purchased memory from both crucial and datamem for my 12" powerbook and G5 powermac... I haven't had any problems with their products.

Im using 2gb and its fine. I got the memory installed on purchase, so cant help with the rest. Thats on my imac 20".

Your other point - considering the A1 or the FX1. The A1 blows the FX1 out of the water.

I'm using 2g of ram on a Macbook Pro without too much trouble (it came with 2g). If I add a lot of effects and such I have to render occasionally. As far as acquiring video for the Canon A1- you don't need anything for that. An extra drive for a scratch disc will be a good thing but not critical for small projects.

2Gigs RAM minimum, as much as you can afford. Secondary drive for scratch disk is mandatory, especially for HDV. And don't edit native HDV, use the Apple Intermediate Codec. Uses less CPU power, easier/faster to edit, no image quality loss. And you'll want to be upgraded to FCP 5.0 at least to edit HDV. I'd also suggest that no matter which camera you get, do some homework and understand the integration issues between that specific camera and FCP before hand.

Yes, i do have FCP 5.1 on the way and a 350gig drive on the way. Thanks guys. I will upgrade to 2 gigs of ram and hopefully in the next few months I will pick up the A1. It will probably drop in price again soon, they usually drop about $100 or $200 after Christmas then level out.

Get that puppy on-line and run Software Update, get all your FCS apps and the OS up to the latest versions. 5.1.2 is really nice.
