Squeeze vs letterbox some comparison grabs.

I did a test for another thread and figured I would post my results up on here as well. You can see the results on my flickr page.

I have found that squeeze gives you the most detail but has the most artifacts. Shooting letterbox and scaling up in post gives you less detail and less artifacts. Shooting 4x3 gives you less detail and more artifacts then both squeeze and letterbox, but gives you the option of reframing.

Let me know what you think.

I'm surprised no one has responded to this... So, am i understanding you correctly? You feel that letterbox is the best option?

Yes

Yes

Ya I deffinately feel letterbox is the best option. Squeeze had more artifacts in my opinion. However if you boost up the coring it may soften out the noise some. Realistically very few people are going to tell the difference unless of course your critiquing the footage looking for noise. I will tell you that shooting 4x3 and cropping in post rendered the worst results using premier cs3.

I can understand more artifacts in squeeze vs. letterbox, but I'm having difficulty with the idea of 4:3 having more artifacts than letterbox. They're essentially using the chips the same way, except letter box chops off a percentage from top and bottom. Interesting thread and comparison idea. Look forward to seeing your shots.

surprising. im not understanding how having the CCD's using their default 4x3 creates more artifacts and less detail.

scannon says:
"Squeeze mode electronically alters the video to make make 16:9 aspect widescreen on the DVX's 4:3 chips. It scales the video vertically (squeezes). This reduces the vertical resolution. I have never unsqueezed video. This technical difference is probably not worth worrying about for standard TV (21''-32") display. But would be more problematic if you were going to larger high definition displays or a projector.

Understand that we are talking about altering the aspect ratio (width vs height) of the video and not increasing the resolution of the video display (squeeze actually reduces the resolution)."
