Spark Scene File experience

If you don't have Barry's HMC 150 book, buy it. Keep it in your camera bag. It seems I always find something to learn from it and it has kept me occupied while waiting for many planes at many airports.

Barry's book comes with a CD of many excellent examples of Scene Files.

After shooting for several years with my XL-1, I 'm continuously amazed at the additional capabilities of the HMC-150; the XL-1 was a camera -- the 150 is a computer, with a lens & viewfinder.

Barry's newer HMC book, in particular, has been very educational for me. It is possible to teach an old dog new tricks!

I have some noise-issues with my HMC... So I just go with the neutral HD norm setting, change it to cine like, and ad just a step on the detail settings, and add some detail coring and take away a couple of notches on the b press to get rid of the darn noise...

I'm really afraid of using any of the other presets and I don't modify the HD norm setting to much because the noise appears really fast.

But this could also be because of the h264 exportsettings in my premiere cs4.. But that a totaly different story =P

Have you done the reset? also dont judge noise based on viewing from your computer monitior.

Yes I've tried that to. I'm shooting almost everything with my sgblade adapter, so the blade helps me a bit with the cine like look. I just add some detail and b press.

Anyone here that knows a good allround scene file setting that produces a low noise picture while giving a rich and nice image? Or is the noise a trade off you just have to live with?:undecided

Maybe if I try to modify the cine v setting by adding some detail coring to remove some noise, that could help...

My ever lasting problem is that while I edit the material it looks great, as soon as I export it, a lot of noise appears all over the screen when viewing it in full screen mode. Don't know if the camera is to blame or premiere..

Admir, I too have the sgblade rr2 with my hmc150. I have been trying to find a scene file or setting that i can use with the blade that will give me the most room in post. i try not to do stuff in camera just in case a client changes their mind with a certain look or something that way i have more options. I also have a noise problem and its not just with the blade. I have had this problem since i purchased the camera last year. So if any of you guys have any suggestions for us i really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

When we export from Premiere noise is not invented -- so you're probably doing something wrong. There are only about 4200 things you need to know about encoding video for the best results (it's a field in itself), so the concise answer is to start researching it online.

Relating to this post -- at the heart of the "Spark" scene file is the B.Press ("black press") gamma. It's the lowest noise gamma curve, and creates an image as pleasing as anything you'll see from an HMC150 -- probably even better than the beloved "Cine V."

In my experience -- lower the chroma level by one or two from the default Spark setting -- and you'll have something that pleases viewers straight from the camera. From memory I think the default chroma level is +4 -- and that created problems for me in post back in the CS4 days.

Well I will try out the spark scene.. It could also be my computer monitor being bad. (250 bucks LG hd monitor)..

I choose the h264, and then I choose the HD TV 720p 25 fps (because that's what I shot in)..

And the results are like theese.. Here, you don't see the noise and such, its more if you make it fullscreen. This is shot with my own scenefile setting http://www.vimeo.com/13215777

I've tweaked my default setting to a hybrid between Spark and Cine-V. I honestly spent two weeks in the studio at work in my down time tweaking 'til I got just the look I was going for.

And yes, averan... the default default setting should be banned (unless you know you're going to do heavy post work). Uuuuuuuuuuglyyyyyyyyyy.

Mike, care to post the settings of your magic scene file?
