GH2 Spanning Glitch using stock firmware

I notice when my stock GH2 spans most of the time it glitches. When I splice the two clips together in Premiere Pro there is a glitch or repeated frames. I'm using 32GB Sandisk 30MB/s Extreme cards. Body Firmware 1.1 Is anyone else having this problem.

Don't drag .MTS files out of the stream folder. Instead import them through the media browser and you'll find the glitches all disappear.

Thanks Barry, when you say media browser are you referring to Premiere Pro or is there a media browser that comes with the camera software. I appreciate your response.

In Premiere Pro. There's a "right way" and a "wrong way" to import AVCHD footage; if you do it the "wrong way" (dragging MTS files out of the stream folder) then you'll run into issues like this. Use the media browser (lower left window) to navigate to your card, it'll automatically recognize it as AVCHD footage, and it'll let you import the spanned clips seamlessly.

I didn't know that, thanks for the info. Does the same thing happen if I copy my footage to my hard drive first? Or is it just an issue reading from cards?

If i as usual import my files to my external drive/s ! the required footage can be loaded up to my software from my drive for editng.
This is an easy way but i am not sure if is another way or the same regarding right and wrong way,i dont use premier pro but will it not work the same way.

Okay, so I just did my next project that involved spanned files and I used the media browser to import them. To my surprise all 4 .mts files imported as just one long stitched together file. Cool.

To transfer the files from my SD card to my computers HD I dragged the whole PRIVATE folder over. Is that necessary? Did I just need to copy the video files over? I just didn't know if there were some other files there that would give some instruction to the application as to how the files should be stitched together.

YES!!! And it's why your import worked.

No no no, that's the wrong way to do it, and that's what leads to people encountering glitches. Never do it that way. Always always always copy the whole PRIVATE folder.

There are very few absolutes in the world, but that's one -- always copy the whole PRIVATE folder, if you want to preserve your footage the way it was shot and have the most options in post.

When you drag the PRIVATE folder over, you bring over every file that it needs. There are files besides the .MTS files that are necessary, so you should never import just the MTS files.

We shoot events with multiple GH2's and find this method works best for editing in Premiere: Create a folder for each camera on your video drive. I like to name them "Camera 1" "Camera 2" and so on... then copy all the contents of the "Private" folder from each card into their respective directory. Then in explorer you can drag the "Camera" folders directly into Premiere's bin and it'll create bins with the stitched .mts files in their respective folders! So your Premiere bin will have: "Camera 1\0001.mts" and so on....for each camera. Premiere will come up with an error saying "such and such files could not be imported because they are not media files" but just click OK and close the nag screen... that's just for the non-media files in the folder.

Weird, I've always just let Window's "Import pictures and video" function automatically copy the video from the SD card to my hard drive when I plug it into the reader. I've never had issues with spanned files being glitched.

Maybe I should clarify the spanned files were glitching because i was manually putting them together end to end. So there would be repeated frames.

Actually I've had skipped frames, but it doesn't matter because they are all there, the software just doesn't know how to combine the separate chunks of video. If you ever get files like that and can't get the original card to re-import you can use a program like https://sites.google.com/site/mtsfilejoiner to rejoin them. You can also do command line. Now against everyone's good advice I usually do just transfer the individual mts files to my drive. But most of my stuff doesn't hit the span mark and I like to use Bridge to rename files to something more descriptive for editing and archiving. But if I was doing a long interview or event I'd take the whole folder.
