hi guys, i recently bought a canon eos 7d camera... i have an panasonic dvx100b also... i was wondering if i can use the dvx100b to record sound... im thinking i can hook up a me66 Sennheiser shotgun mike on it and sync it in post... what do you guys think? other sugestions welcomed... Thanks guys..

Sure, that will work. Of course, you'll be adding unnecessary hours to your DVX heads that way, and it's a pretty cumbersome way to handle sound. Your best bet is to get a separate, dedicated audio recorder like the Zoom H4n or the Fostex FR2-LE. Then, you have file-based audio that's much better than what the 7D would record directly and also saves the hassle of having to lug a second camera just to record audio (not to mention the real-time capturing of the audio).

Fostex. Much better pre-amps. Please be aware that the headphone amp in the Fostex isn't great, but the hiss you hear in the cans is not recorded at all.

I have never used my DVX to be my audio recorder for my 7D, and I think it would be fine, except my firestore dies after about 90 min... What is the best way to sync in FCP?

Same way(s) as with any double-system sound. Find a sync point between the scratch/reference audio with your footage, and the separate audio file. Theoretically, you'll have a clap board on set/location and can use the clap to sync. Line the two clips up by the spike in the waveform, then ditch the scratch audio.

You can also use a third-party alignment tool such as PluralEyes.
