Sound Devices Pix240 is rolling out into Retail

High frame rates

High frame rates

Question #3: Will the PIX 240 record variable frame rates from cameras in 720 or 1080?
Answer: The PIX will record at the rate of the HDMI or HD-SDI input or up/down scale to a range of other supported frame rates. No off-time recording will be available. This could be considered in a future release.

In layman's terms is that a No to recording high frame rates ?

Here are some questions I posed to Sound Devices and the answers they emailed me.

In layman's terms does that mean the recorder is not able to record high frame rates such as 300FPS 2K from Epics?

I don't know if it helps but the PIX240 will up or down convert any incoming signal in order to record at the following resolution/rates:

1080p30
1080p29.97
1080p25
1080p24
1080p23.976
1080i60
1080i59.94
1080i50
720p60
720p59.94
720p50
720p30
720p29.97
720p25
720p24
720p23.976

I didn't think that a single HD-SDI could transmit 300fps @ 2K... I'm surprised the data rate is up to it? What signal gets transmitted from your Epic at these rates?

Only the NanoFlash will record variable frame rates. All devices such as Pix and Samurai record what comes out of SDI or HDMI. The NanoFlash implements timelapse and under/overcranking within the unit itself.
