Sound Devices Pix240 is rolling out into Retail

Got got a note that Abel Cine Tech in Burbank has received units of the Sound Devices Pix240. For those in the market for a 10 bit recorder you might want to phone them up quick. There appears to be a lot of pent up demand for it.

Hi
I got a reply today on from Paul on the Sound Devices forum
"Hi Pier
Production demo units were shipped last week.
PIX240 stock units will be shipping in about 3 weeks.
FYI - DNxHD is now included as standard.
regards
Paul"
Not sure those unit are for, it's a good sign I don't have to wait too long for mine ( got it from B&H though !)
the good news is for Avid users !
Are we ( F3 users) the only one waiting for this product ?

Well, the base price jumped by $150... from $2600 to $2750... incidentally, the Samurai add-on fee for DNxHD is rumored to be $150... I think they just lumped the cost in for everyone.

Any word on whether they incorporated some of the features requested, such as scopes, peaking, and 1:1 pixel display?

Has anybody done a hands-on review yet?

Because AJA will be a free firmware update, SD was just going to charge 100 bucks of something extra for it. Now they are just adding it for free as part of the unit.

Not exactly. AJA is eating the licensing. SD originally announced dnx as option but i think wisely decided to bundle it. The price increase of $150 represents the licensing.

I'm missing this as well.... What does the hardware manufacturer AJA, have to do with an AVID video codec? They're not the same company. Nor are they part of Sound Devices.

AJA recently announced that this December, in a couple of months, through a free firmware update it will allow people to record their footage to DNxHD.

Both the Ki Pro Mini and the to be released Pix240 are in the same product space, hence why AJA has done people a favor by doing this.

There is a lot of fluidity in the editing sphere of the film biz now that Apple has arguably bowed out of the pro video market. Both AVID and Adobe are clamouring for this loosened marketshare and the industry in general is trying to be prepared for the expected shift. Having the ability to crank out AVID ready footage should be very much on the mind of camera operators and producers in my view.

I'm moving to either Premiere Pro or AVID possibly both in the next few months. I spend time in each app every day now and I may very well move to a DNxHD based workflow for my own work.

Pretty sure whomever will post up soon after trying out the Pix240 on the F3. Lots of people seem interested in the pairing.

The amount of fan noise is my number one question at the moment.

The PIX is on the large size and a bit heavy. Very sturdy. In the few minutes I had to play with it, the fan did not kick in. SD claims it is quiet but I have to verify that myself before believing any claim. It also appears that the caddy is required in order to use SSD drives ($99 street price). It does a 2:3 pulldown as well as up/down/cross convert. In terms of the ProRes recorders, I suspect that it will come down to a contest between Ninja, Samurai and Pix. I have a sideKick HD from FFV here right now for eval. It is a nice unit-- light weight and plastic. Doesn't feel heavy duty to me but FFV claims it is a very heavy-duty plastic. Screen has a very nice image. Both HD-SDI and HDMI (mini HDMI connectos). Street price around $2500 but includes one 128gb SSD. Note that only ProRes is standard. PrRes HQ is a $100 option. DNxHD will be offered eventually and I think that will be about $150. For similar money, Pix is my preference. At a lower price point, FFV would be a contender. And don't sell the NanoFlash short. XDCAM HD is a great codec, the Nano is dependable and it is the only recorder which will under/over crank as well as do interval recording. And C-D constantly updates features. No fan, either.

I put my preorder in for a Samurai. Got it with for $1495, vendor threw in a iKan articulating arm. Plan on getting two 120GB SSDs for it... about $500 in cost. That's $2000. If I pick up the Avid DNxHD upgrade that'll be 150 more.

I like the look of the Pix 240, but it was going to cost me about 4k, by the time I got the accessories and data storage.

I couldn't justify it.

Feedback on Samurai, please...

You won't get feedback for a while. He pre-ordered it. Samurais aren't shipping yet. Nobody has one yet. Should be shipping by the end of this month or so if I've read the prior posts correctly.

So he did not "get it", just ordered it... The wait continues...
