Sound Devices Pix240 is rolling out into Retail

i shot 64 gb card - to avid dnxhd 220 x - the highest quality - got 34 minutes on a card.

Is the monitor worse than the tvlogic 5''? - probably. haven't used the tv logic much. it's good that the pix has video on it - to see an image - but i would never use it to do anything sort of exposure judging. it's sharp though - you could probably do critical focus off it. but I love my marshall 7' monitor and false colors so I'll continue to use that. but in terms of the PIX 240 - more important than having a super great monitor for focus/exposure - is that having the very nice display makes it easy to get thru menu items quickly. the thing is built like an apple device - a lot of thought went into it. it just feels right.

the fan is not a problem in terms of audio - it's very quiet. I don't think Sound Devices as a sound company could possibly make the sound problematic on it.

also it is basically a mini teranex - i shot at 29.97progressive - it came out of the F3 sdi port at 1080i 59.94 - and i was able to convert it to 29.97 progressive. the nanoflash couldn't figure out how to get the 29.97progressive out of the interlaced stream. sorry Nanoflash - i love you baby. I have 3 of you. But the PIX is a very nice addition to my external recorder family.

It appears that supplies of the Pix240 are quite constrained. I ordered 9/14 and 5 weeks later I'm still #76 on Abel's list. Other vendors I've contacted are quoting "maybe December" deliveries for new orders. I have placed an order with another dealer as back-up.

As my Abel rep said: "It's the F3 all over again."

If it was built like an apple device it would look great but do stuff all and be imcompatible with anything but other apples.

Well I ordered from Abelcine in July and still nothing.

Does this device have sound monitoring as in, can I just decide to use this as a sound recorder with features to control audio levels using the touchscreen, and connect to a shotgun mic?

Also, when buying a kit, what is included in the box? What is needed to buy extra to run it? For example, the drive caddy, the drives. Do you need to buy the eSATAp cables or is it included in something? What about the articulating arm, is it included in the device package or not? Is a battery charger included in anything or do you need to buy separate?

Thanks.

As I understand it, the Pix requires a video signal to record. So you cannot use this as a sound recorder alone. And, btw, it does not have a touch screen.

I looked over the manual. But I was wondering would anyone recommend using this device as a substitute for a production recorder? Can it be used that way?

What is the main advantage with this over the ATOMOS Samurai if you just wanted good 4:2:2 ProRes and you are just going to use HD-SDI?

Not necessarily a lot of advantage if any for your specific scenario. But keep in mind we're comparing a just released product to a product that isn't out yet (although, apparently, it might be a week from now) - meaning there's not been any time to stress test these devices and see what quirks and such they may have.

Ultimately, the Pix 240 offers a great deal more flexibility. XLR inputs, HDMI, timecode, CF card slot, physical buttons... don't need these things? The Samurai may be a perfect fit for you. I'm getting a Samurai. I'd love the Pix240, but I can't justify the cost difference when I look at my workflow.

for those who received their pix240, can you post some pics of how you mounted to your camera please?
thanks in advance!

i mount mine via the 1/4-20 hole in the back to a noga arm that is going into a Zacuto red plate or whatever that little thing is that goes onto a rod system. works quite easily. yes you can monitor sound thru the menu system - makes a huge display that shows you levels.

it does not come with a noga arm. it's just the pix and an ac adapter. you have to find out how you want to power it and order that part and order the caddy if you want to use the SSD drives with it.

Mine arrives tomorrow and I'll post some pix pics (sorry... couldn't resist). I will power from D Tap to Hirose connector. Note that you cannot use the NanoFlash D Tap to Hirose since they are wired opposite. Also intend to mount on Noga arm into Berkey top plate. And thanks to Ed for the lead on the Pix. I was fortunate enough to find one that a customer had decided not to take.
