Sound-blankets

The blankets are not for sound proofing but diffusion. A lot of things work to do this including the human body but blankets are the most convenient tool that can be taken from set to set easily.

Sorry, I didn't have in mind sound proofing but if a set is too live for your voices,
shouldn't you have a rough idea what frequencies your blankets will absorb rather than diffuse?
And how do you measure that, how many blankets do you put up, first time on that set?
Hard questions all, experience with your chosen blankets for different size rooms is the answer I guess. And as you say portability is paramount.

From a post perspective you probably cant make it too dead. If you sound post is all going to be in FCP or another NLE then I would try to avoid REALLY dead but you don't have much chance of ever getting a set dead, there is just too much other stuff around.

Reverb is a tricky thing but as a rule it's better to have less then then you want then more. If I see any opportunity to take it out I am on it.

I am working on a scene right now that is in front of a mirror and the boom was placed in such a way that on the wide the actress speaking sort of towards the mirror does not have much reverb but on the close up it's echo city. Noiz could probably have this fixed up quick but it is driving me nuts. :badputer:

Hey, is the group buy gonna happen? I'm still in if so... I like the 5 grommets in an L idea... cotton... heavy!

i would be up for 8-10 blankets if the price is kept down.

black on both sides if its cheaper would be the best way to go.

i am not interested in paying a lot for grommets when i can add my own or just use spring clamps.

i know steve of kayelites. he is an amazing dp/lighting guru.

i worked with him on a feature a few weeks ago.

i bought a set of appleboxes from him.

we really want to pay attention to weight and then try to keep the cost down.

right now i use the blue on one side and light blue on the other side ones from uhaul.

dark blue, dark green, black etc.

those are all great.

just hate to see the price double from what it could have been just to get black/white and grommets.

forget who said it but someone said somewhere to pay attention to only spend money on better things if it directly improved the picture/movie etc.

i have used the uhaul blankets extensively to deaden the sound and those are relatively lightweight ones.

i know the deluxe ones (cotton and really heavy and well stitched) are bought by movers for $6 or $7 with no grommets.

but again, those blankets they get are both heavy and really well made and dark colors.

never saw any grommets on their blankets.

Looks like some want grommets and some don't. That's cool.
Will be a double order then, some with, some without.

(Grommets are not cheap, at $1/each...hence the price increase.)

damn you guys and your "we live in the states lets group buy" mentality :)

if i lived in a feasible locale, i would be in too, but alas i dont.

Hehe, sorry, Tim.

But don't count this out completely. 4 blankets would cost about $70 (shipping charge) to send to you. Yeah, it's not cheap, but at least you could feel part of the "buy"! :)

ha ha! :) thanks for the invite, but blankets are one of the few sound tools that are readily available here.

enjoy em everyone..

Hehe...

Hey, if my travels call for SA in the near future, I'll be sure to bring you some!
:)

uh?

uh?

Uh...so does this mean I missed the boat on these? Does anyone know where to get heavy black/white moving blankets for decent prices? I don't mind doing the grommets myself.

I've followed up on this last week with the company that was going to make them; all they said was so far, that they are checking on it. Not sure why that would take this long, but there you have it.

Okay, listen up:

The sound blankets are coming. About two weeks away.
They will be available directly from the manufacturer at their website, and they are already online ready for ordering.

At $16.50/each this is a REAL bargain. considering others are selling this at over double the price and some even way more than that.

Here's the blurb:
BW Cotton Blanket "Producer's Choice"
72.00x80.00

All Cotton Blankets. One side Black, the other side - White. Weight 8.2 lbs.
We call it "Producer's Choice", because these blankets were specifically requested by Movie Producers and also Recording Studios and designed for the sound proofing and to accomodate special light reflection requirements.

I haven't seen one of these yet, but will buy a few as soon as they are available.

The site is:

Once available, I'll be asking if they can offer a discount for ordering 12, as they do with their other blankets.

Cheers!

For $16.50 they are grommetless; when ordering you can add grommets for $1.00 each.
And before someone complains about that grommet price: I am told -and I believe- that they aren't getting rich off the grommets, and are providing that as a service for which they don't make [much] profit.

Beware of the MARKERTEK one!!
Although nice, they include following disclaimer:

Colors and Patterns may vary

yea, my Markerteks are blue and black. Really nice blankets at a good price, but as my producer buddy stated on some behind the scenes footage, while piled under a couple of them.... "these things smell like donkey piss" :)

Thanks Vidled for putting something like this together. The upside to the cotton ones is that when my wife kicks me out for buying too much gear that I don't need I have something cozy to cuddle up with. :)

Good news:
if you order a dozen at the same time they'll only be $12.92/each, or $155.00 for the 12!

Mention "4MAL" in the COMMENT area to get this great deal!
