Sound-blankets

Grommets:
they are expensive, so maybe 8 aren't necessary?
What do ya'll think? Would it be good enough to have just three on one side only? Which side, the shorter one (72").

Price is coming down too, and with less grommets it would even more...

I'm still thinking of making this a minimum order kind of deal (to cut down on work), but now maybe 4 per order; two with grommets, and two without. What's the preference here?

Thanks wabbit for the suggestion!

Here's some things that further feedback would be appreciated on:

- amount and position of grommets
- fire retardant treatment

And: anything else that is desired/wished in a sound blanket. I know it's not a very exciting item, a sound blanket. It doesn't quite have the glamour of a mic mixer :) or is a good conversational piece; but if anyone would like to add or comment on this, NOW would be an excellent time. Would be a shame if some withold comments until the things have been made.

You can install your own grommets. The kit is cheap, and they work fairly well if you can swing a hammer with some force.

Polyester!!! The white soundblanket will not be white long if cotton. Theses thins can double up nicely as positve and negative fill. How a about 5 grommets 3 on the long 2 on the short side, making the 3rd of the long the third of the short side as well. Like this you can choose how to hang them. I think all should have grommets!

Gomets are easy and cheap to put in yourself. If your really worried have them do one on each corner and do the rest your self.
Fire retardant. Call a local theatre and find out where they get it done. All drapes and set fabrics in theatres have to be fireproofed so where they go will know how to deal with large fabric and what they put on should last awhile. I hadn't thought of fireproofing sound blankets but since you never know what idiot is going to stick a light against one it's probably a very good idea.

Thanks Jon,
it's looking good though; the price I mentioned earlier was with GROMMETS, and that does add cost.

For NO grommets he will be charging just under $16 each and $145 for a dozen (preliminary at least), and I believe he can ship from either California or New York.

My early calculations of $100 included 8 GROMMETS and shipping of three blankets, hence the appearance of "expensive".

Beware of the MARKERTEK one!!
Although nice, they include following disclaimer:

Colors and Patterns may vary

Also the professional Matthewsgrip blanket is only 5.5 lbs

maybe the cheepest is to make the reserge for one of thos 6lsb mowing blankets and try finding some place that does them in black and white allready, that put the gormets in youre self. Some of these blankets are being sold for around 11 $. Dont know, just an idea, also the lead time to manufacture was verry long, 2 months or something. Sounds like a ***** to wait that long and maybe it is not worth it for you to bust your ass.

That Advantage Grip one looks pretty darn good. Full-size 72x80, black on one side and white on the other, has grommets, and weighs 9 pounds!

Here's another one:

8.2 pounds, black & white with grommets, $34.95 each.

Thats the one to go with, i wonder if they give a deal if you buy 8 - 12 at once. The best would be to get those blankets for like 16$ without grommets, than just put them in your self. Its funny this are all the same blankets just beeing sold for diffarent aplications at diffarent prices.

By the way "grommets" is one fuctup word, i have to copy and paste it everytime.

So, it remains:
we will be getting a BETTER quality blanket at a GREAT price ($12.10 per blanket when ordering 12 - no grommets;
and $17.10 per blanket when ordering 12 - with 5 grommets.
It's about 8 weeks out right now.

That BARN DOOR one looks great too, albeit double the price.

Please add me to the list if it's not too late already.

I'd also like to offer a thought: If the blankets are that heavy, then it may just be best to have grommets "professionally" installed. Yes, it may be cheaper to do it yourself, but I suspect it may prove more hassle than the savings is worth. If you need grommets at all.

Hi all, just read thru and couldn't find any refs. to....shouldn't you find out what frequencies the 'blankets' attenuate before ordering. Custom designed sound foam and tiles refer to certain frequencies for users to specify.

If any of the these blankets attenuate the mid voice range, then they could be trouble?
