Sound-blankets

Hi,

I was looking for cheep sound-blankets and came across this.

http://moverssupplies.com/MOVING-BLANKETS/Moving-Blanket-by-dozen-12-pieces-Deluxe/

This is dark blue and light blue, which would be kind of annoying as it would tint the light if you would hang several of these.

I asked the guy if he could do black/light gray or white, and he said yes, but that it would take two months. Also he was wondering if it was worth his while for only 12 blankets for me, so i told him there where surly others that might be interested for a 10-15$ sound blanket.

Also for 1$ each they put in grommets where you want.

So if you are interested, maybe send the guy a pep email to make him see that there is a market for this stuff. His name is Jeff and his mail support@moverssupplies.com

Which one of theses fabrics/styles would be the most suitable as a sound-blanket?

Im thinking something synthetic so you can also lay this on the floor and have people walk on it?

What do you guys think?

Are there any other cheep neutral color solutions out there?

Black on one side, white on the other. I'd be down for half a dozen of those. They do exist, but they're like $75 apiece.

And grommets are mandatory, gotta have the grommets...

Me, too... half a dozen! Black/Grey would be good, too, as I don't expect white to stay white. Grommets in the corners , better yet perhaps 4/side

White is good. Even if you have to wash them from time to time, white is much better for those situations when you don't want to loose ambient light.

The Harborfreight ones may be a little too lightweight...they only weigh 4 pounds each. But, for the price, you could double them up and still be ahead. ;-)

They are indeed quite light. The ones I found there were black on both sides. Real moving blankets are far better for acoustic control.

Just a follow-up -- when moving, I figured I needed some moving blankets, so I went to Harbor Freight, and yeah -- the Harbor Freight ones are extremely lightweight and would be nigh unto useless for sound blankets. They're also not black and white, they're black and gray. As ptalsky suggested, if you used three or four of them they might work for some manner of sound control, but not by themselves.

Wow, great thread (thanks Barry for the follow up!).

I'm in communication with the company in the original post now, as I need some blankets also.
Anyone interested in buying these, please post here. I'm thinking group-buy here.

Color would be BLACK one side, LIGHT gray other side. 3 grommets each side (8 total). 72"x80".

There is currently a question open regarding fabric: two choices:

Polyester: lighter, mildew resistant and easier to wash & dry; also is a little "shiny" though
Cotton: heavier, more expensive, non-shiny

I'd say cotton.

I vote cotton - tends to be tad quiter, too. It also tends to shrink when washed. Thanks for working on this!

I'd buy some, but can't they go just a little further and get 'em white on one side? Cotton over polyester too.

Yeah, I'm trying; he's saying that white just COMPLETELY jacks up the price (although he hasn't said how much yet..., I'll find out...).

We're currently looking at ALL cotton.
Weight for 72"x80" is ~8.2lbs (Matthews are 5.5lbs, Harbor freight are 4lbs 10oz).

Well, if "completely" means from $8 each to $11 each, that's probably fine. If it's from $8 each to $30 each, then yeah, forget that! :)

Okay, it's looking good; we have to figure out logistics (shipping etc.), but it looks like BLACK one side and WHITE other side is possible.

Specs:
- All COTTON, 1 side is BLACK, the other side is WHITE
- Inside material Recycled COTTON
- 72" X 80" (183cm X 203cm)
- approximately 8.0 lbs

Cost still depends on shipping (I might pick them up myself in NYC), and grommets. With 8 grommets (three each side), this will come in at around $20 to $25 each. I'm thinking of a minimum of three per order, at $100 incl. shipping in USA (lower 48 States). But nothing firm yet, still negotiating....

A little suggestion. Get a couple of the cheapo crap ones to put on the floor. It does not take much time for your good blankets to get trashed to crap from being walked on all day. If possible, use the grip truck's blankets for the floor. :)

Cheers
