Sony Vegas Pro 10

I've never really had a problem with Vegas except for rendering which I found a solution for eventually. However recently I'm having a preview monitor problem. If I load a project or even start a new one (with MBL used in it) the preview monitor will freeze and hang the program. Very irritating. Tried everything I could think of.
MBL is really holding down Vegas. Officially, it only supports Vegas Pro 8 (forget about 10, not even 9!). It is not only supported on only the 32-bit Vegas but also Windows Vista 64 or 7 64 are not officially supported. In a nutshell, MBL was designed for Vegas Pro 8 on a 32-bit OS and Red Giant haven't really bothered updating the core. The end result, it's going to be buggy on Vegas Pro 10 on a 64-bit OS. It's a miracle it even works! I have noticed slow downs and crashes and it gets worse with every new version of Vegas Pro, which kind of gives the illusion that SCS are degrading the software. Instead, try getting rid of the MBL liability and Vegas Pro 10 is arguably the fastest and most stable NLE out there.

Unless Red Giant wakes up and updates their software, if MBL is really important to your workflow, you might want to look at Premiere Pro CS5. Till then we can bombard MBL with requests to properly support Vegas Pro 10 (64-bit).

Did you download and install the latest driver for your graphics card? Or sometimes roll back to a previous driver?

Yeah tried that which worked until I rebooted. Sometimes I can get it to work by just clicking individual clips then reverting to a blank part of the timeline and then playing the timeline. It'll then usually be fine 'till I load the project again or reorder the timeline significantly

Is your power supply PSU adequate, and providing stable voltage? I imagine it takes more power to run PCs these days, especially if doubling the workload on a graphics GPU to display to a second monitor. I have a 700W Fatal1ty PSU for my six core and two monitors. Do you have issues using two monitors when NOT using Sony Vegas? If so I would look at your PSU, DVI/video cable connections, etc. Otherwise maybe it is a bug in Vegas.

Yeah mine is a 680w and I'm only running at about 500w full load and I ran a test on it, I don't think there is any problem with it. It's fine on Vista with Vegas 9e and MBL it just seems to be an issue with Win7/MBL/V9 or 10. I might just have to revert back to Vista if I want to use the preview monitor. I don't have any issues beyond Vegas and I don't have any issues with Vegas really. It's only when the MBL plugin is on a clip. If I don't use the preview monitor ( with an MBL clip)then it'll playback without freezing.

Running two monitors doesn't take much more power than running one. Just putting a picture on the screen takes barely anything.

I dropped into this thread to see if version 10 actually worked properly. guess not.

I'd have to agree with PerroneFord on his points about Vegas's downfall. I was a long time vegas editor (since version 4 at least) and have seen it die a slow death of instability, at least since version 8.1 escaped into the market. The worst thing in video editing is having no confidence in your NLE to get you through large projects of tight deadlines. For this vegas is one big FAIL. I use FCP/AVID when I can, and keep vegas around for web vids.

for some it's not the nle prob it's the hardware specially as far as i'm concerned. Just have the opportunity to have the rite stuff and ur good. Vegas doesnt require much

It's not Vegas' problem. I think it's a third party problem. Vegas is good and competitive with FCP and Avid I think, however it's lacking in third party plugin or hardware support or any real scope for it. That's what is killing Vegas, not the fact that it crashes. Every crash I've found a solution to, even my recent one with the external monitor is to do with a third party plugin. Infact it's to Vegas' credit that it works at all. On the Red Giant website, it says MBL is only supposed to work on Vegas 7 & 8, yet I get it to run fine on Vegas 10 without running the External preview monitor in Win 7 and on Vegas 9 I get no issues at all on Vista or W7.

I'm not sure how serious Sony are about their NLE taking on the big two (FCP,AVID) but if they are, they need to seriously address the third party issue. Most of the other little problems with it, could be easily solved with a bit of coding. But to be fair to Sony, there aren't that many serious ones.

I can tell you right now, having Avid and Vegas on both my desktop and laptop editing machines, this is pretty far off the mark. Even without third party support, Vegas just isn't there yet. Comparisons to Edius may be more appropriate. But the stability of the core program just isn't there for me, nor is it able to collaborate with anything else effectively. They keep adding nice features and that's awesome. But to me it's built on a house of cards. If they did a solid re-write, and incorporated certain pro level features, I'd be more inclined to agree.

I said years ago that Vegas is a fine, basic finishing app, and I still believe that. But if you need to get your work OUT of Vegas to work with other platforms, you're in for a battle. And until they fix that, comparisons to FCP, and especially Avid, just don't fly.

Sony Pro 10 has been crashing on me when I render to .avi files I don't know if its the amount of Fx I have on it but it does slow it down before crashing. This is my 6th time for me trying to get it to render @ 100% and I can't do it. Any help would be appreciated. They are .mov files if that helps

What codec are you rendering to?
Thanks David for responding. I tried the sony yav codec and also just tried to render to WMV V11 and it still blacks out at about 83%-86%...my thoughts were maybe it was a clip but ive already tested that out by rendering each of those clips and they came out fine. I want to re-install but something tells me that the problem is somewhere on the timeline. THank you again Sir.

Ill try this out thank you.
I have a i7 920 with 12gb DDR3 ram. I doubt it is a ram issue..but nothing hurts to try. :)

Ok after of a whole day researching on the internet the only solution...or should I say a temporary solution is to copy your work with CTRL+A then CTRL+C to copy Open a new project and CTRL+V to paste. I then rendered and it worked. Unbelievable...I hope 10.0b has this fix. Take care guys

I love the Vegas interface; it's the best out there IMO...But the software sucks and Sony doesn't care about it. They'd rather sell TV's. Vegas Pro 10 is basically 9.0 with a service pack; the 64-bit version still spawns 32-bit processes and it's unstable, has no hardware acceleration, and doesn't support AVC-Intra (to name a few drawbacks).

In my opinion, Premiere Pro CS5 is the best. It's not intuitive to use but is stable and fast.

After years of using Vegas I'm inclined to agree. I'm currently in the process of editing a wedding video in Vegas 10, but I have purchased CS5 Design. Honestly, the major issue for me is plugin support. I love the interface, but its the fact that it hasn't had a real makeover since 8!

Red Giant isn't supporting Vegas, as in, at all. They have no plans to update their codecs past Vegas 8 32bit support. There are NO plans for a 64bit plugin, let alone anything past 8, as far I know. I called them multiple times and that seems to be the situation. Sucks for everyone on Vegas including myself until I learn Premiere.

I keep having crashing issues now with 10. I just got 10.b and whenever I use .ts files its crashes every time. This is without any plugins, just 720 footage being edited
