Hey Rob,

I am not sure how much weight my opinion should hold.... I am just a guy with a bunch of cams that shoots for fun. I mostly shoot while backpacking around the world so I am always looking for the newest best thing that suits my purpose. All this to say, I am not sure how the video will hold up against your fs100. The video for me is awesome, but I am putting it against GH1 and D5100 footage which is great, but maybe not compared to the fs100? Not sure...

Pros: Small, 60p crisp vid, manual control, good autofocus, great OIS, shallow dof all in a tiny package. For me it's perfect! Plus I put this cam on a flycam and I can leave all the weights at home and shoot 60p 1080! This means a lot when I am backpacking.
Cons: No 24p, the focus ring is focus by wire and takes some getting used to, sometimes the codec craps out at 28/mbs and you get mud on complex scenes.

Here are some vids that you can check out to see what I have done with other cams, hope this helps!

One question if you would answer: How does this camera act if you let it run past 30 minutes? I might want a small camera to record for maybe an hour at a time. Would the RX100 seemlessly create a new file after 30 minutes and continue recording?

Thanks

Sorry I am really not sure about that.. I never record longer than 30 seconds or so...

Thanks for sharing Rod. Does look good for a P&S. Does the camera change the shutter speed in auto? Do you know if there is a way to keep the shutter speed fixed?

Hi Bassman, yes you have full manual control over shutter, aperture ISO and focus- OR any combination of any of these as auto/manual mix!. I did mess around on this shoot and had some ridiculously high shutter speeds , so as I mentioned , it wasn't scientific in any way, just finding my way around it.

it also has a remarkable follow focus , where a target is selected and then as long as it remains in the frame it will follow- in any mode-any setting! One thing I haven't found yet is an exposure meter, so leaving, say ISO on auto ensures correct exposure if fiddling with shutter/aperture .(but I'm sure it has one somewhere- it has a spirit level on screen that is just like a flight simulator- why is this not standard on every camera?- amazing.
The only negative so far is that there is no way to switch off digital zoom, even though there is a control which says digital zoom off. Strangely, it even mentions this in the manual. (so I'm not sure what digital zoom off actually does) . This means that when using the modest optical zoom, you have to be very careful not to run in to the digital area- because the zoom stops for a few milliseconds which produces a jerk in the zoom- you can see this in the railwayway station internal tiling shots of the tiled coving. although I must say the digital zoom is still pretty good.

I hope this helps, just ask away and I will try and answer from my voyage of discovery. This is a deceptively complex camera, I found so anyway, far more so than my Panasonic AC160a. The OIS is really good and perfect for slow pans and side step shots. Walking with it requires a technique, a bit like carrying a cup of tea- this is where the spirit level on screen can help ( I haven't masteressd this yet as you can see, but it is a work in progress.)
Cheers!

Thanks Rod. I am considering this camera for a combination GoPro type of use as well as a camera to shoot the scoreboard at athletic events. It is so small I think one could find a lot of places to incorporate it into productions.
A poster at DPReview let me know that in AVCHD mode, the camera will keep on recording past the 30 minute mark and just make a new file. Great news for me.

How is the battery life using video? Does it allow for changing of a battery?

Hi Bassman, batteries are removable - I have just received my second one- essential to have a spare.. The battery lasts about 80 minutes (it says in the manual). The bad news is that it has to be charged in camera- just connect the usb lead to your PC.or use the supplied wall charger to go mains. I guess a separate charger will be offered later.

I also discovered that it has focus assist/ peeking (you choose the colour) for manual focus, and a WFM! I say discovered, because the user manual just about covers fitting the strap and switching it on- useless! The online manual isn't much better, so it is a voyage of discovery. (fun though) . It does also have an exposure meter for when shooting in manual mode.
Hope this helps. If there is anything else you want me to explore, just shout.

Thanks for your reply Rod. I have been looking at different P&S cameras and while the RX100 looks nice, the video image that is catching my eye is the Sony HX20v. It has a ton of detail but I can not confirm if it will record past 30 minutes without stopping...
Sony said both the RX100 and the HX20v would stop after 30 minutes. It is tough to know what to believe in consumer land!

Hi again Bassman,
Well two runs and it is 22 minutes each at 1080/50p 28m before it stopped. The manual states average 29 depending on setting and content so I guess thet's an answer for you. Luckily none of my stuff is ever much longer than a minute or so, so it will work for me, but not suitable for extended continuous recording. Hope this helps with your decision.
Cheers!
Rod
