Sony rx100 video

Hi again Bassman,
Well two runs and it is 22 minutes each at 1080/50p 28m before it stopped. The manual states average 29 depending on setting and content so I guess thet's an answer for you. Luckily none of my stuff is ever much longer than a minute or so, so it will work for me, but not suitable for extended continuous recording. Hope this helps with your decision.
Cheers!

rod-

you have spoken of the rx100 video quality but have not said anything about it's audio features.

external mic input?

stereo?

headphone to monitor?

low/hi cut filter in the audio menu?

the ability to adjust levels in the audio menu?

any and all info as to the rx100's audio features would be appreciated.

be well.

Hi Rob,
so far, the only thing that it seems to have is adjustable audio levels. This is definitely not a sound man's camera. There are no external inputs for mic or earphones that I can see. Although the sound (as wild sound) appears good and usable. Virtually all of my work is voiceovered and I would not for one minute suggest that this beauty could replace my Panasonic 160A. But for notebook video work and B roll work, and sheer mobility of it , it is on the money for video definition.

In fact, for me, this is its main purpose: an HD go anywhere video camera that can be anywhere anytime, as long as you remembered to pick it up! It does mix happily with my Panasonic 160A and is perfect for street scenes, carnivals, Santa parades, graduation parades etc, where lugging a bigger camera and tripod is a shoot project , requiring commitment and planning, rather than going to, and enjoying the event, gathering HD footage on the way. Just another tool in the box I guess. But how many times have you been out and about and thought" darn, I wish I had my camera with me" ( Well I have many times!)

If there is anything you want me to try, ask away, I will do my best to help.
Cheers!

Right, having used this for a while, the most irritating and disappointing feature is that you just cannot turn off the digital zoom when in video mode. ARRRRRRgh!!!! The digital zoom in video is crap. It jumps when it hits 3,6X from optical to digital and then staggers in a jerky sort of way to full electronic digtal zoom and the resolution is so SD! Unusable for me.

Sony, please give us a firmware update to lock off this horrible digital zoom in video mode!!!! Up to 3,6x the resolution is superb then it all turns to megapoo! such a shame, as when using the zoom ( which is not the smoothest in the world), there is no really obvious stop and once you are in to digital zoom above 3.6x it is grim and really lets this camera down.

So, some disappointment there for me. I would be very interested in hearing from other users on this issue.

Some of my tests

Depth of field and flens flares - mild grading - had the stablizer on, but didn't realize it had to be in active mode for the most steading - no ND filter back then, so Aperture prority mode, F1.8, and so the shutter speeds shot up.
60p conformed to 24p, kinda skippy looking except the slow mo bits.

Was stuck in traffic the day I got it, and whipped it and shot this :)
60p conformed to 30p - audio surprisingly good and no wind buffeting somehow - still thinking of a way to put some foam wind screen on the mic openings in any case

Tests with Magfilter threaded adapter holding a Marumi ND8 filter and a Marumi Super DHG CPL - stabilizer on active mode, so much steadier
