Sony RX10 II or Canon XC10

Dusty,
What was your cost with cam and a card or two?
List price. Only have the 64gb card that come with it.
For tripod work I plan on using the shogun which I tested. Recording externally looks really good. I'll buy some more Cfast when they a bit cheaper.
Had a bit of buyers remorse and thought about returning it. But the more I shot with it the more I liked it. C-log is just so nice with this camera. Stabilization on this camera is quite amazing.

Its ts really like a baby c300. I have a nice 3 week shooting trip starting and plan on shooting lots with this camera.

Interesting. So far the BH feedback is quite mixed. One negative review mentioned the loss of touchscreen access when a LCD loupe is attached. Hadn't thought of that before.
Have you posted any footage?
Tried any audio inputting to see if any surprises?

I personally think the Shogun turns this camera into a different little beast. An amazing combo.

when the loupe is on, yes you cant really use the touch screen. But the thumb controller on the grip can still access everything. It's just one of the quirks of the camera.

Oh yeah, the shogun really elevated this camera.

I haven't had time to film anything worth viewing. I've just pointed it at cars, trees, the house across the street and at my family. I'm just really busy right now. Last month I was home a total 4 days. This month Im home a total 6 days. I need a vacation and this camera would be in my hands the entire time.

My rating out of a score of 10? Considering its a 1 inch sensor I will give it a 7.5. While the lens is good I would have been happier with a 2.8 on wide and f/4 on the long end. But it is what it is. Ergonomically? It's fantastic. It's a good camera in the 1 inch sensor category. Canon color is what makes it so nice. Did I mention the stabilization? It's really really good.

For me, once I started using that thumbstick I never use the touchscreen even if the loupe is off.
Prices of C-fast is of course different depending on country. But I just bough a 64GB Lexar card from ebay for less than half the cost in Sweden and its just above what the SD for the BMPCC was at release. So no worry.

"I personally think the Shogun turns this camera into a different little beast."

Doesn't sound like the canon internals are lacking..how so?

I'll definitely post some footage tomorrow...but baking in looks is the main reason. And as far as I know, FCP X (which is the NLE I use) doesn't support the MXF Wrapper yet, so having 4K ProRes HQ files is nice as I do not want to convert the files using other software.

I don't think Canon has confirmed the HDMI out is 10-bit, so I don't know how much of a difference you would see from the native 8-bit 422 files, but working in ProRes is always nice anyway. And for the price, this is your best bet if you would like to shoot Canon LOG.

Just ordered the Sony. Thanks for the advice will post some footage when I get it if you like

You'd love it. I've had the RX10 2 for over a week and don't regret letting go of my GH4 for it. That Slog2 and slow-mo is so sweet. Here's are a few bits i shot a few days ago:

Wow. Nice stuff.

He sure is :) I am doing a few more tests with his profile and will post results soon, but it works like a charm, saves so much time in post it's not even funny!

I am also trying the FLaat settings and a my modified Cine2/Pro profile for night exteriors.... kind of very pleasantly surprised of how much DR that little sensor has

I have just shot around the house and been playing with Kholi's settings, wow love them. When I have some good footage to share I will. So far very glad I went with the Sony! My lav mics work great with it love the slow motion and love the lens. Very happy

i don't know why, but it's interesting to me that you could get nearly 2 FZ1000's for the price of 1 RX10/2, and nearly 2 RX10's for 1 xc10. kinda shows what each company values itself as (setting aside all other target market factors of course)

IMO, this is typical Japanese "mutual benefit society" at this stage of the game. Doubling the price essentially prevents competition and, if prices are too close, then the features/purposes of the products are not.

Eventually, of course, it all becomes a free-for-all on the 75% of the market. The high end keeps its margins longer ... for as long as it's still high end.

I do have a question on the Canon and Sony. How good is the camera stabilization in 1080HD on these two cameras? I have an olympus EM1 and the it is amazing, allows me to use the camera and get shots that have been impossible without extra gear.

I decided to make it easier when I couldn't decide between the two and bought both :) so now I have an XC10 and an RX10 II. I kind of prefer the XC10 more, as it's a stronger codec in Full HD and in 4K (8bit 422 at 305Mb/s) plus Canon's colour is a step about Sony's IMHO. At least easier to work with.
