FS7: Sony rumored to release new FS7

Yup, mine arrived on the 3rd November 2014 (would have gotten it on the 30th October if I had gone and picked it up myself ;-)

God, that was a simpler, happier time wasn't it?

before LUT limitation-gate. Before shutter bug-gate. Before 12-bit linear raw-gate.

FS7 hipsters are the best.

Excuse me?? Don't know why you started the lying thing? I was p*ssed about Sony and my (Ex)dealer. You should be sorry with me.

Read your post #71 again.

btw two years ago is not true. I ordered mine in December 2014 long before it was available.

The cameras shipped before you even ordered yours. That's a fact. I received mine end of October. That is also a fact. I'm guessing this is something lost in translation and you didn't actually mean to imply I was lying. I hope that's the case...

If Sony will announce FS7 mark II it will add more features to it and put it above FS7 price wise. So don't be discouraged to buy FS7 unless you're eager to pay like 2-3 grand more for extra (unknown yet) features. FS7 is just selling to good at current price to kill it with a next generation. At the same time mark II will defo be just an upgrade with maybe more frame rates, vND, better AF and few tweaks here and there but nothing substantially better or revolutionary.

Of course I can be all wrong :D

Both Liam and Clermond is right, I think similar situation was over the world. There was first batch of FS7 that were sold almost immediately. Then there was this super long gap of 5-6 months when you had to wait in a queue for your unit. Around April/May of 2015 everything went to normal and FS7 sales exploded.

I received mine on 2014-12-02 but then I cancelled my first order and went with a better deal so it took a few more weeks. At the moment I really don't care about an updated version, if that's the unlikely case. Added features have to be extensive for me to move on from my FS7.

The A6500 might be downsampling from 24MP but what frame rates is that setup capable of pulling? One imagines even with updated ASICS nowhere near enough at a good quality for it to be feasible in an FS7 replacement.

i would assume that the FS7II won't get a new sensor...otherwise it would be a completely new model?
the RX100V can actually shoot 20mpix raw 24fps for 5?6? sec....which is crazy....20mpix raw IBIS AF on a SD card in a tiny body....i would not want that size sensor but in general it should not be too hard to take some of that (and maybe the 6500 sensor?) and put it into a much bigger body to deal with heat/processing/....much faster media (XQD is fine with me and should easily be fast enough) all for about 4-5 times the price?
one of the features that keeps popping up with the A9 (A7 follow up bodies) rumors is that they will only have XQD and pretty much unlimited raw shooting at very high fps....
looks like sony is approaching the issue from both sides....raw compressed video from their high end motion cameras and higher and longer (recording times) fps in their still cameras....
eventually they will meet up somewhere in the middle.....funny that the RX100V (as the least likely one) seems to be the first one scratching at that point....
it all really is happening because sony just does not hold back when it comes to adding features...

the question about the FS7 being stuck without updates: the F5/F55 have gotten a lot of attention and with price drops have stayed incredibly interesting even now....i don't see sony changing that for the FS7?

I'm 99% certain I won't be upgrading to the latest iteration of the same unless there is something radically different about the image processing.

RX100 v shoots about 17fps for a few seconds. With less dynamic range. On a small sensor. With no audio.

That's not even vaguely comparable to what you'd want in a modern broadcast-capable camera. It's essentially as much a gimmick as 'FS7 raw' was.

IGiven Sony's success with scaling 6K to 4K (minus overheating issues), I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the sensor from the a6500 put into this next camera...

My guess is Sony will eventually add a BSI sensor to their pro line of cameras, but it will be a more or less a complete redesign, & not pulled from a stills camera due to the need for faster readout.

Exactly.

A6500 and the A7SII are good tools in their own way but their capabilities when it comes to producing moving pictures is so far removed from a mid-range S35 camera like the FS7 it's not even funny.

it actually shoot 24 fps but you have to use shutter speeds less then 1/100....and like i said this is a much smaller sensor and obviously this "feature" is in no way intended (by sony) to create a motion sequence....but this is their consumer camera well below even the 6000 series....i simply like that they are making their cameras so fast that a continuous shooting might provide a pretty amazing motion sequence in future and more higher end cameras!
i really liked my FS7, the A7RII (or A7S) are nowhere close....i thought the A9 would be out first but i guess the FS7 followup will be first now....i am really excited, the FS7 is amazing, can't wait to see this new one...

BTW the XAVC 480 only goes up to max 30p.. no S&Q.. there will be some times the extra will help.. but TBH I think it will be pretty hard to see any difference 95% of the time..

To be honest the only times I have an issue with my camera is when I'm pushing it outside its comfort zone, at which point higher bitrates would almost certainly help a bit.

That might be going a little far, calling the a7sII and a6500 so incompetent next to the FS7 that, "it's not even funny." I can think of a lot of situations where I'd rather have an a7sII with a fast prime than a large kitted out FS7. I've also seen video out of both those cameras that the FS7 simply isn't capable of creating (though they are both limited overall compared to the FS7 in their implementation). Nevertheless, the sensors in the a7sII and a6500 are both significantly more advanced than the FS7's. The fact that Sony limits their output to 8-bit with a lesser codec is part of what keeps their true video capability untapped. The a6500 can shoot over 300 24mp pictures at 11fps as is, so if it were tuned for an FS7 level camera, it could produce some incredible images.

I don't think the new 24mp sensor will end up in the FS7 II based on everyone'S input (it better not anyway, haha), but a version of it could be a great option for Sony's next big leap. I can see it working in the F5/55 replacement because it could offer both 4K and 6K recording. And I think ~24.7mp is the minimum needed to derive a true RGB 4K signal-- which definitely sounds like an F5/55 feature. If the F5/55 successor can record both 6K and 4K from its sensor, and the "FS8" is capable of "only" supersampled 4K, that could be one effective way to segment the models. Who knows.

I'd love to hear more details about the FS7 II announcement...

I owned an A7s from launch and then an A7SII from launch until I sold it last month.

There is is no shot that it can get that an FS7 can't unless you want to record a horrible 12,800ISO image for some reason.

They have a place and their comfort zone is capable of great images but they are stills cameras and are significantly poorer in terms of image quality compared to an FS7. Compared to an FS5 however, they have more merit.

I'm at a point where I have to say I don't know what i could need that i don't have with the fs7. I work mostly in cine Ei and even in custom mode I have a custom profile that delivers great skin tones and good dynamic range. I work with fully manual lenses and have no electronics interfering with focus aperture or stabilisation. If anything I wish the built was more robust so I can keep shooting it for another year or two.

Never seen a stills sensor doing ~14 stops at ISO1600. And then I mean that you have around 5-6 stops both ways from middle grey.

There are other considerations outside of image quality, you know.

Such as? Which things outside of image quality does an A7SII or A6500 do better than an FS7? Battery life/frame rates/codecs/audio recording all belong to the FS7 too as well, no?

If you're shooting undercover or something and need a tiny camera why is the FS7 even on your radar?

If it's purely the cost issue that is irrelevant to this particular thread.

EDIT: Reading this back it sound confrontational which isn't my intention, but I genuinely want to know what you referred to because having used the A7s extensively there was very much a time and a place for them - and that time was 'whenever the FS7 was already in use'.
