Sony reveals 1st NXCAM camcorder: HXR-NX5U

Holy buckets. The NX5U "street price" already dropped $500 (to a hair under $4k) at B&H and now the 128GB flash memory unit is $250 after rebate (way cheaper than SDHC cards)! At this rate, the cam and optional gear designed for it will be free, way before Sony can even get the first one out the factory door!

Sweet!

If the NX5U gets to $3500 pretty quick (doesn't seem real likely, but who knows), the HMC150 and AX2000 will probably both wind up well under $3000 in short order. I can't imagine the AX2000 selling very well, with only a $500 difference between it and the NX5U. A case can be made that the HMC150 has at least some advantages compared to the NX5U (like CCDs, for folks who don't give a rip about resolved detail, but live in constant fear of a CMOS camcorder turning everything nearby to jello), but the AX2000 clearly has absolutely none at all (considerably stripped down really). That $3500 price tag on the AX2000 (at B&H right now) almost has to drop considerably, long before the cams start shipping.

I'm for starting a petition to Congress, to demand the outlawing of 4:2:0 24p being recorded in 60i streams by prosumer camcorders (or any camcorder that cost more than $50, for that matter). That's just ridiculous. Sony should dump that nonsense, or record 4:2:2.

You know, that 128 gig flash memory adapter, at $250 bucks, sure does make the NX5U look even better. That is not a minor thingy really. That is considerably less expensive than SDHC cards (of any size) and big enough to shoot continuously almost all day (unless you don't have a life at all and don't like to sleep much either). It sure looks like Sony wants to enter the marketplace for pro AVCHD camcorders quite aggressively. What's next? A package with half a dozen NPF970s for a hondo?

hmm maybe i don't need an EX after all.

if the price of NX5U really drops to $3500 range, with its higher resolution and SDI output, i guess HMC150 is dead.
nah.

what i love about the hmc150 is the wide lens and waveform monitor.
Once the price go down further for the 150 itll be a bargain.

i think nx5 wont go further 3990. thats what the z5u is priced at right now.

Making good predictions, about what's going to happen with the HMC150's pricing, is pretty tough at this point, especially before Canon offers at least some details about their new offering. That's a pretty big wild card.

It's certainly not out of the question that Canon might offer up a cam with slightly better resolution than the NX5U, and price it lower. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Canon comes out with something slightly better than the NX5U (in an all-around, on-the-whole sort of sense) and prices it $500 lower (and maybe even offer up a sizable rebate for awhile to boot, like they did with the XH-A1, to really get the ball rolling).

One thing is all but certain. The street price for HMC150s will go down, but how much is a very open question.

hey man where are you getting $250 from? B&H is going for $750 ish

Is it just me, or is it a bit odd how they always say no rebates to PO Boxes, but you always have to send the form to their PO Box?

There's a way around this. If you get a box via a UPS store, you have a REAL address. Not a PO box. I learned that when I was setting up an LLC. Stuff goes to a secure location, and it works like a PO box, but you get to put a real street address.

That's a hell of a find right there. Should really help our fellow neighbors in need...
