FS5: Sony releases v1.1 firmware

My advice would be to find a way to afford an FS7 even if you have to wait a little while before you buy it. The FS7 is a really huge step up from the FS5 for not all that much more money in the long run.

For the meantime I'll just continue saving up. And carefully watch both cams with firmware updates, etc.

Until the raw update comes out and the fs5 is better for half the price if you 7q.

Absoultely true. The FS5 will never beat the FS7 or even come close to it. The cameras are about as different as two cameras from the same manufacturer can be.

There will always be something better on the horizon, its an endless game of upgrades for me. It's getting to the point where camera technologies are moving as fast as computer chip tech. I remember paying over 150k for my first indigo extreme SGI computer early 90's? It's now complete trash.. lol

What do you mean by beat? Is this camera wars? lol That's funny. What ever happened to capable hands? Reminds me of the "I own an ARRI, I'm an official DP now". lol

liondor1969 the more u go over 240fps is gonna get crappier and crappier and at 800fps you should expect those artefacts.

What frame rate did you use in your video with the highlight issue and did u shoot 4K?

shoot in 1920x1080.. this problem is NOT FROM you tube,i have this problem direct from my SD card

What frame rate and picture profile did you use in the video with SpecuHighlight issue?
(if its over 240fps then that could be yr culprit)

Capable hands still won't change it's internal specs ;) I think this is a talk about technical capabilities of cameras not user capabilities. Because if not then you should get T2i and NEVER go beyond.

I can confirm that the firmware update did not fix the fringing issue on specular highlights. Not that I expected it to as Sony has not acknowledged it as a problem. But the FS5 in 1080p will do this no matter what Picture Profile or gamma setting you use. It's most obvious when shooting S-LOG.
The only workarounds I have found are to shoot in 4k (which is not possible when shooting slow motion, of course), or to use a diffusion filter in front of the lens.

Quote taken from RedShark: "At the end of the day, all of this comes down to choices – do we want less noise, or fewer noise-reduction artefacts, and do we want greater sharpness or fewer compression artefacts.

I would go for fewer artefacts as its easy to clean up noise in post.

BTW loving the FS5.

Here is a little sample with the new V1.11 firmware. I rushed over to Balboa Park and had maybe an hour of sunlight. Some of the last shots are 6400 ISO in pretty dark conditions like the lily Pond. It was very dark. Yes it's noisy and I did use some Neat Video but it cleaned up pretty well. I love the Prado shot at 2:40. Also 6400 ISO but much cleaner since I was able to get more light in.

The noise is so much easier to clean up and the FS5 noise isn't RBG like but more like film grain. Reminds me of the C300 in that way so my take is the blocks are gone and the image even if you push the low light will have some wiggle room. I cant recommend enough to get a good exposure with 4K and the FS5. That alone will clean up the image. I used CINE 2 with PRO color.

Nice Erik, I love the kid blasting the bubble :)

What PP did u end up using?

I don't mind me a little grain.
