FS5: Sony PXW-FX6

Brilliant thanks for that. I had my eye on the 256Gb version of the Kingston but for the sake of redundancy 2 x 128Gbs might be better.

My Lexar X2000 SDXC does UHD/120 and 1080/240 also. For how long remain to be seen but super slow motion clips are usually not ongoing for minutes anyway. I did consider to either go for the CFexpress or SDXC but the simplicity of SD cards with readers everywhere and a cheaper price swinged me towards them.

I'm very satisfied with how the FX6 works and found no issues so far. It's a far more solid camera than either FS7 or FS5 was so early on.

It is a miracle!

With all the AE, AF, Auto ND functions and E-mount lenses I don't have to do much to deliver pretty looking footage. Coming from FS7/FS5 everything is familiar and finally everything works. I can't think of any other camera beating it regardless of price when I sum up all the features and image quality.

Not touched an FS7 for a couple of years but I instantly knew how to use this camera completely. Now to persuade clients to actually want to shoot anything!

So here’s one I don’t quite understand. I was going through my FX6’s menus today when I got curious about seeing how low the shutter speed could go. I thought that when using the camera in the interval mode for a timelapse, it might be useful to know what kind of shutter speeds are available for creative purposes.

I noticed after scrolling down to 1/24th that the numbers start to go 2F, 3F, 4F, etc. This is a new one for me as I’ve never seen shutter speeds labeled with an F before. Can anyone explain to me what that means?

These are slow shutter speeds so you can get that ‘smeary’
look on timelapses. From what I was told F does stand for
frames. You may have to max out the ND and iris down a little
but it works well, I’ve shot several timelapses this way.

Had a quick Base 800iso test in the rain outside just now and it seems as previously with SLOG3 exposing 90% white for around 75IRE (instead of 61%) is spot-on for exposure. Non scientific but testing overexposure seemed fine to pull back blown sky by a stop or more too.

Nice and simple just like the FS7.

Is there any way to toggle a lut/log view to a custom key?

Doing some tests today with the FX6 and the increased exposure latitude compared to an Fs5 or even an FS7 is really impressive. This was all in Cine EI mode.

Overexposure is similar, in that 3 or 4 stops over in slog3 is still very usable. Even 4 1/3 stops over was solid, which is an improvement. The brightest areas were blowing out but skin still looked good.

Also, the base exposure—exposing at Sony's recommended levels for slog3—is far cleaner, especially in Low Base. While overexposing by a stop does clean up the image—and is probably a good idea in High Base—it's not necessary, as was the case with the Fs5 and FS7.

But underexposure is significantly more forgiving, and is where I'm noticing the most improvement.

In Low Base ISO (800) I feel like 3 stops under is still usable. It's noisy, but definitely usable (for my purposes). At 4 stops under there's a ton of noise but the image is still there, and if it came down to getting a shot or not getting it this would work (in a doc setting, at least—and for me; YMMV).

In High Base ISO (12800) there's more noise overall, but 2 stops under is still usable. At 3 and 4 stops under things are getting very, very noisy. BUT: the noise (as I'm seeing it) looks more random, whereas in Low Base ISO the noise at 4 stops under looks more like Fixed Pattern Noise. If anything, the image 4 stops under in Hi is better than it is 4 stops under in Lo (at least from these initial tests, and per my tastes).

One thing I did notice: there is some very aggressive moire at times. I was wearing a light green sweatshirt with a pretty tight thread pattern and the sensor was not happy with that in some situations.

Just found out that the new Sony charger wont charge 3rd. party batteries. The old charger from PMW-200 will charge the Hedbox battery just fine.

Hi all,
I got my FX6 yesterday, 2 weeks only after the order :)
The autofocus operation is 100% fine with all my Sigma lenses (eye tracking included)
14-24/2.8 DGDN
24-70/2.8 DGDN
105/2.8 DGDN Macro
105/1.4 FE ('the Monster')
I noticed also that the lens correction (shading-chroma aberration-geom distortion) can be activated.
A full manual lens that not communicates with the camera can be used (I checked with the 50/0.95 Zonghyi)

I like the user interface and the quite infinite options of customization.
I think I will use it most of the time in Manual Iris/angle shutter/AGC ON and ND Auto if outside.

I was wondering how the priorities are managed if all Autos are ON (Iris ON, AGC ON and ND ON). AGC I guess will be the last one.
I think the most logical would be first ND, then Iris and last one AGC. OR maybe it's not allowed. Will check.

Its annoying that the charger dosent charge 3rd party batteries. The FS7 charger does that just fine. I heard the same from a friend that bought some Hawk Woods batteries

I have a question regarding DaVinciResolve

I was using DaVinci 17 Beta (free) without problem with my A7R4.
I tried with the FX6 files, it does not work. I mean AVC-I class 300 10b 4.2.2
The imported files are shown red as 'Offline', whatever you do. No message. After some research, I found that this may be due to the fact that this format is not supported by the free version, therefore to use the FX6 files you need to buy the Studio version
I would like to have the confirmation of this before spend 300 € for that and that it's not a bug of the 17 Beta version. I'm surprised to not see a message like 'this format is not supported by the free version, please buy the Studio Version' instead of just a red 'Offline'.
Apart of that, I don't think abnormal to pay for the full features, the ones offered in the free version are great for a normal usage.

Yeah the free version doesn’t support certain codecs and I’ve had friends run into this with their FS7 footage in the past. When they upgraded to the Studio version it worked. I’ve always had the Studio version, so I myself haven’t ran into that, but I’m almost positive that’s what’s happening with your FX6 files. My FX6 files play fine in Resolve.
