FS5: Sony PXW-FX6

I've had zero problems matching an Fs7 to an Fx9 as they are currently my A & B cams...both shooting Slog3. So I can't image an Fx6 would be any more difficult.

Hi all,

Long time no speak. Hope everyone is well.

My FX6 is arriving tomorrow.

Am I right in thinking that only Swit and Hawk-Woods do third party batts these days?

I don't know how third party bats hold up over time but today I used a Sony BP-U60 from 2011 and it still kicks. So over time the original Sony bats just keeps on going.

Scott ..Back to the dark side sir ?

Yep. Had a few years in the wilderness with a Red, and then got ill and bought an EVA-1 because it was so tiny and I didn't know if I'd get my strength back. But nobody wanted to use it despite it being a brilliant little camera.

Now I'm fine again and the FX6 looks like a nice compact camera that will be very popular. And in today's climate I want the thing people will pay to use :)

What have I missed?

:)

I had a look at FX9 but realistically it was going in the other way from what I needed.

It's just arrived and I have to say it is adorably tiny.

I’m wondering if the IDX batteries will register with the FX6. I have some SWITs and my FX6 doesn’t read the battery levels on them. It just says 100% all the time, even when I know the SWIT is about to die. I’m curious if the IDX’s do the same thing. I’d love to buy some IDX’s because they look great, but I want them to register with the camera.

Pity about those SWITs. I have a few and really like them (the ones I have are with the D-Tap and USB outlets, code S-8U63). They work well on my PMW-300 and my FS5. I have a few original Sony BP-U60s too - some of which are at least 10 years old and still mostly going strong. The secret I think is to try and store them part charged, never fully charged (difficult sometimes to get that right though when filming schedules suddenly change!). Since I'm planning on getting FX6 sometime this Spring/Summer I'm disappointed Sony took it upon themselves (not for the first time) to hinder 3rd party battery info...sigh!

Yeah those are the exact same ones I have. I love them. They are discontinued now which is a shame.

They worked great on my FS7 & FS7II cameras without ever having an issue. And they will power and run the FX6 without a hitch as well. It’s just that the FX6 won’t read the battery levels on them and I can’t have that for my work. I need to be able to see and monitor my batteries while shooting.

I wonder if that’s only these specific batteries, or if that’s a thing with all third party batteries with the FX6. I really want to know because I want to use third party batteries to get access to D-Tap ports (USB ports are nice to have as well) and Sony’s own batteries don’t offer that. That’s why I’m interested in how the IDX batteries work with the FX6.

I have a few third party batteries so I'll check this out later today. One is a SWIT, so that's unfortunate to hear about them.

Just FYI, two of my third-party batteries—a SWIT S-8U93 and a Wasabi Power BP-U60 equivalent—seem to work (mostly) fine with my FX6. At the very least they show percentage and runtime remaining.

First pic is the SWIT, second is the Wasabi Power.

My problem is that I'm handing over the footage to post after the shooting and its not that much time set aside for grading (and I'm not involved) Any tips?

Another quick question. Is it just the Sony lenses that make use of the fabby autofocus or will the Zeiss Batis and Sigma E-mount offer as good performance. Might get the odd one or two AF lenses for fun.

Cinematch? Supposedly that program is fast and accurate.

Zeiss and Sigma offer as good performance. But performance varies per lens based on motor design and firmware. Generally, more recent lenses perform better. For example, I use the sigma 24-70 and sony 28-135 with my A7SIII and the sigma is much faster. One of my clients has the Zeiss 18 and it's very fast. Tamron and Samyang also do good autofocus in E mount. I have the Tamron 70-180 and it is stellar. I get good results with samyang 18, 35, and 85, but supposedly their first lens for the system (the 50 f/1.4) is still crappy even after a million firmware updates, according to reviews.
