Sony PMW-X70

  • Viewfinder includes amazing OLED technology

This 0.39-inch OLED viewfinder offers superb OLED brightness, contrast and response. The high resolution (1,440K dot) of the viewfinder allows better precision of manual focus operations and eliminates any colour-breaking phenomenon.

Wow, this PMW-X70 is looking better and better. This is Sony though, so there has to be a "gotcha" somewhere. :Drogar-BlackEye(DBG

12x is nice but it's a tad slow at F4.5 on the long end. I would rather see F2.8 at the long end and F1.8 at the wide end.

I suppose the f4 is a tradeoff for the 1" chip? Re the 12x I'm not sure how those electronic magnification modes work, do you still get 1920x1080 by virtue of the pixels used for 4k? Too bad they didn't make this one waterproof. I really like my little NX70.

I used to get excited about these different cameras coming out and we had the same kind of posts for the RX10 and the AX100, but I was personally disappointed.

The added features and the improvements from model to model are great, but at the end of the day, the quality (and I hate to say this) still has that same video look to me. The Blackmagic cameras have tons of issues, but the image and all of the variables associated with it (DR, detail, RAW workflow, etc.) has hypnotized me so much that I cannot stand any other look from any camera anymore. (Although I do love RED cameras.)

And this is not just a Sony thing because I'm a big fan (will never sell FS700), but with everyone. Sure, I can get a good looking image out of all of these little cameras, but I'm just not satisfied with the look. It's very hard to explain.

Depends on what youre doing with it...if you WANT cinematic, maybe not right cam. If you need something that looks good for ENG, presentations, talking heads, etc., maybe it is. For me it seems its between this and a used ex1 or ex1r. Pretty sure i could get this cam, plus bag batts and 8 hours worth of media for 1/2-2/3 of what the same package would cost with an ex.

The thing is though, not one of the other little cameras has an S16 sensor and 10 bit 4:2:2 recording. We need to see more footage, but for now I'm trusting Chapman's opinion that the image is very good and more "film like" than the usual small sensor in these little cameras.

The 24x clear image zoom apparently isn't the typical cheesy pixel generating digital zoom. Maybe cheesy in other ways................

Alister Chapman writes about it here:
http://www.xdcam-user.com/2014/07/the-sony-pxw-x70-sometimes-good-things-come-in-small-packages/

I'm looking forward to seeing real world reviews of this cam. I say that as someone who is inherently skeptical of Sony marketing.

The PWM-X70 is just an AX100 with some pro features but missing 4k (for now). Based on that, the 24x clear image zoom is exactly the cheesy digital zoom found on all cameras. When you use it, you will loose detail and dynamic range. You will get better results shooting without it and then zooming in in post if necessary.

Nice that they put together a piece with challenging lighting situations..a far cry from the typical pre-production exterior shots.
