FS5: Sony officially announces the FS5 Mark II

So... these radical new changes in the Mk II, which sound like they’re almost entirely software-based, can’t be brought to the original FS-5?

Not enough new features to warrant a full upgrade if you own the original, which will just breed resentment of the brand.

Did you even read what I wrote above? There is more than likely advantages to the color science in log. And you are making a lot of assumptions in your statment. Generally, people who are in the market for this camera neither have the time nor the money to be spending on intensive post production coloring. If i can get the same or better results with slog2 and/or the picture profiles, making my results more predictable and improving my skin tones, why not? I've just saved a lot of time and money for my business. I am incredulous to your argument.

Nope, it looks like there will not be any changes to color science in slog 2/3.

It sounds very much like what Noah had said, "venice look" will just be like another baked in default look ie. like a cinegamma etc..

Yes it definitely sounds like they could bring it to the mk1 but we know they won't.

It’s a shame!
A exact same FS5 with a firmware update!
Thank you Sony!
At least I don’t have to resale my FS5 for a Mk2.

For those who are disappointed with the new FS5II, you should get the FS7. You really think that the new FS5 would have similar specs to the FS7?

I have the fs7 it's too big and heavy- I'd pay (high) for its specs and raw out without xcda in fs5 form

This is what I think too. While I don't think a 5K camera is geared toward beginners, I spent the first year+ with my Fs5 having people tell me the Fs5 looked bad so they returned it, then surprised at how good my footage looked. It took me a few shoots to get a handle on the camera and most people don't have that patience. Honestly these color tones they show look close to what I get with the RAW output on my mk1. Glad I don't need to upgrade but really wish it could have given those that do a little more on spec. 10 bit DCI or 4k60 alone probably would have got me to bite.

Example for those of you interested in images over specs.

Certainly, an extremely impressive example. The minor specs bumps left me cold but these skin tones do look truly superb. As an existing FS5 owner not sure (yet) if I'll be upgrading. I'd probably rather go for the FS7 MkII (but I would hate the extra weight/size).

At least I don't have to worry about it until the FS5MkII becomes available in June and more examples become available.

Well, it could have been same price as the FS7 (original)...

To me AF is important, and the FS7 has really bad AF... FS700...

It's not that bad. You do others a disservice to others making categorical statements like that.

The FS7 with the Sony 18-110mm is quite usable, quite quick and fairly accurate. Agreed not up to Canon DPAF for sure. On the other hand the 18-110 on the FS5 is the total opposite, sluggish, unresponsive and often misses the mark. it also performs hopelessly sluggishly on the FS700. How the three cameras can behave so differently with the same lens is beyond me. Well that's my experience with all three cams with the 18-110 and that's with with all cams running their latest respective firmware.

Would be great if they could do an update for the existing Fs5 with this new colour science! And why not also give the HFR and Raw update for free for Fs5 owners so then we all have basically a MkII...

Same here. lol let’s start a petition.... :) or maybe I’d be interested in paying even $250 for all three. :)

The upgrade licenses are expected to go on sale very soon for exiting mk1 owners, so for those who haven't purchased yet, now will be a great time.

For the record the current (April 9th 2018) best UK prices I can find for the update keys (from ProAV, a good UK dealer) are as follows:

RAW output update key = £425+VAT
HFR update key = £455+VAT

I think I paid about £60 to rent Doug Jensen's informative FS5 training tutorial videos on Vimeo a couple of years back (which included his excellent 'FS5 Vortex Pro' Picture Profile).

Now, all I need is some black paint for the ND wheel and to stencil FS5II on the side of my FS5 and I'll be good for another few years/no one will know! ;-)

As an aside, I also own a PMW-300 (and had an EX3 before that). Some of Sony's other announcements (especially the PXW-Z280) look like an upgraded 4K version of the PMW-300 might be in Sony's sights within the next 12 months.
