FS5: Sony officially announces the FS5 Mark II

As idiotic as it sounds, it would almost seem that the mkii was just being used to market Sony's even newer and refined color science of Venice.

Wow... does sound idiotic ... but you might have a point... nothing else makes much sense.

Such an odd move really. Why not just issue a firmware update for all of your existing FS5s? (and thereby avoid pissing of the vast masses of people who have recently invested in the original camera, and now look like they have outdated cameras, when there's really no difference between the two)

I agree... and have been scratching my head ever since the announcement. Very odd. And gives me pause about the brand...

If they're smart (and I keep getting really MIXED signals on that front with Sony), they'll look to bring this updated colour science to all of their current cameras - F5, F55, and FS7 through firmware updates.

It would a great way to refresh and revise everyone's opinions of the 'look' of the brand.

well, I'll say this much. A few days ago I saw a test shot on the VENICE and it's really impressive.
If the FS5 II delivers a very similar image for $5k it will be something to consider despite the lack of other updates.
I just wish SONY had added the stronger twist lock mount from the FS7 II, so it can support heavier lenses.

I hope they go the other way... what’s the point of a small nimble camera if you put heavy lenses on it?
Give it the great auto focus of the new A7 cameras and put out some new (and lightweight) apsc lenses with OSS... I kinda like that it’s possible to switch Lens with one hand...
Sure, the cool thing with the FS5 is that it can also be a serious raw shooting camera, but the bigger heavier mount is low on my list of priorities... make the FS5 great for hand held stuff first, there’s the FS7 if you want big heavy lenses...

Regarding color science.... have you tried doing a Transform Colorspace on the first node in Resolve to Arri C-log?
Instantly makes it prettier...

^^^^^

I was thinking along the same lines. I recently shot some S-log2 footage on the (original) FS5 and using FCP X, dropped the Panasonic V-log LUT on it...voilà. Great color

Hmmm, so the e-mount doesn't flex under the weight of a PL adapter and lens thus throwing your image out of focus?
With the 'heavier' locking mount you can have your cake AND eat it.

One great feature of the FS5 is that it does not need the RAW I/O box that the FS7 needs. Which makes it a smaller and cheaper RAW capable camera. You can shoot it run and gun as a tiny camera with small lenses or drop it on a tripod with a heavier lens. The stronger mount makes it better in 'studio mode'. The stronger mount would also help it compete with the EVA1.

the log mode is still the same as far as I understood. What's new is the REC709 gamma similar to the Venice.

I have no intentions of ever using the FS5 with PL mount glass.

Not saying it’s a bad thing but for the way I want to use the camera, a sturdier mount if very far down on the priority list...

It’s also marketed as a light weight camera for hand held use, so it would make more sense in that regard to add things such as IBIS and better AF before a locking mount... (which would also encourage people to get Sony glass, which should be in their interest)

The locking e-mount weighs next to nothing. You'd never notice the difference, when handling the camera.

It isnt... just another question of getting used to it.
Ofcourse you wont be changing lenses ferrari style when soloing with locking mount, but if you are soloing thats probably something we already came to terms with :)

Well, I could deal with not being able to do it, but actually would prefer if it was possible, and almost every possible update to the camera is more important to me than a locking mount. If they added it, it wouldn’t be a dealbreaker. Unless the only new thing with the FS5mkIII was a locking mount and a red ND knob ;)

When the camera comes out I'll try to rent one and reverse engineer the lut so we can apply it to Slog footage.

Don't have to wait for camera to be released
