FS7: Sony May Lose My Business Over $15

I jumped ship from Red to Sony and while I'd say my FS7 has paid for itself, this is certainly the last Sony camera I will buy for a long time unless something changes drastically. I can just about accept the rush to get to market and a lot of bugs due to be fixed with a firmware revision, but when it has arrived months late and is just about as useless as before, and they genuinely don't seem to stand behind their product whatsoever. And don't even get me started on the extension unit and the horrific raw implementation that is unusable.

This camera shipped with some very bold claims about its abilities. Several months on and luts are all but unusable. raw is terrible. settings reset themselves all the time. waveform monitors switch off when they feel like it. and on and on

I agree. I really liked my FS700 despite some of the weird quirks (shutter angle not working correctly) and the 7Q made it a beast of a camera. I can say with certainty that I helped sell quite a few a both (and I have a lot of emails, tweets, etc. of people asking me for advice, questions, etc. that I put a lot of time into helping them reach a purchase decision--with no benefit to me whatsoever).

I was all over the FS7 when it was announced... but I have to say, this thing has been a buggy mess that is making me strongly consider jumping from Sony. And I'm no longer giving out recommendations for the FS7 the way I was with the FS700+7Q combo.

Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the tip!

I was having the same exact problem, an intermittent high pitched tone in the audio when using the Smart Shoe Adapter. I tried everything, different wireless mics, different frequencies, etc., nothing worked! Until I saw this.

I turned off GPS, and just as you said the noise went away. Thanks for the tip!!

That said, I am a little frustrated like the o.p. I expect my gear to work, and want to be able to use GPS and the Smart shoe *at the same time* (Wow, I'm crazy, right?)

I hope sony addresses this issue.

Also, I wonder if those who have given the adapter rave reviews didnt have GPS turned on, some how lucked out, or have just gone deaf to high frequencies.

Hi!
As far as strange sounds coming from the shoe are - I had a similar problem
I bought the blutooth wireless mic for the hotshoe and I had very low beeping coming from that audio input (Shoe)
I replaced the Wireless mic from amazon - but still got the beeping.
Then I found out - it is the GPS Setting.
I turned it off and now it works like a charm.
hopefully this helps
Now I have 2 XLR inputs + 1 Build in MIC and 1 from the SHOE with the blutooth mic Sony ECM-W1M

Certain low serial number receivers had that interference issue. Later ones did not. Check with Sony service to see if yours was affected and they should replace it for you. This has not been a problem since Sony discovered the issue and fixed subsequent units.

Contact Teaneck. The public number may send you to a useless phone tree manned by people who aren't engineers and who frequently have no authority. Try numbers just a digit or two off and you might stumble across a line that reaches the humans at Teaneck. Once I managed to talk to an engineer at Teaneck my problem was resolved quickly - but if you just use the phone tree number they have no clue and tell you it's your responsibility to pay to ship it in and they shrug. I don't think it's reasonable to sell a defective unit unfit for purpose and then expect me to pay shipping to have it repaired to do what it should have done at the time of purchase.

The Sony Customer service agents I've spoken to today didn't seem one bit perturbed by the idea that a brand loyal Sony customer with over $50k in prior investment with the company's products over 8 years might take his future business to a competitor.

This is what happens in large corporations. “That’s sales, that’s not my department. I get evaluated on whether I meet the rules set up by customer service.”
