Sony FX3 camcorder registered - 8K?

A lack of EVF is a big miss IMO. The A7SIII's EVF is really great - so life-like...

Lack of EVF.

THe camera needs a reason to be. Is it a small handheld camera.. in which case it cannot function without an EVF.

Or is it a drone gimbal crashcam block. In which case an evf is not needed and a screen is also not need but is handy.

My 5d in 2008 - I put a thingy on the back (evf thingy - not batts just an enclosed lens stuck on the rear screen) and it was good to shoot. Most of these cameras dont seem to hit that level - a decade later.

Then this is not the camera for you. Doesn't mean it does not fit perfectly for someone else who doesn't need a viewfinder

Can we not loupe this screen? Hell, that's all that's happening on the fx6

I actually really enjoyed shooting with my 7d and a zacuto loupe on a shoulder rig with an offset arm for the camera itself because the camera sensor was in line with my eye's optical axis and panning was more natural than when the camera is on the shoulder mounted forward

This won’t stand up. I mean if they called it a studio camera (bm have thise don’t they?) fair enough. But I guarantee the launch footage will be some insta hero out in the sun filming a dancer in a wind machine flowing dress.

The launch footage for that new little panny wax a disgrace. The hipster hero didn’t have any ND or way of shading the screen- literally firing blind

I don't know, Abe. Will the LCD hinge be strong enough? If it's the same LCD unit as the A7SIII I would have my doubts that it could survive as a contact point for very long. The thing with the FX6 is it looks to be a relatively strong lcd mount like the FS7/FS5 (not withstanding some of the early reports of floppy mounts that I'm sure Sony will correct)...

I mean, the EVF on the a7siii does not articulate, so if you put a loupe on the fx3 and left the screen closed, it would seem to me that you're no worse off than you were with the a7siii and then you don't need to worry about the hinge. but sure - compares unfavorably to the fx6

there's also that third mounting point on the top left of the body that could host an EVF support.

I wonder if this camera will have LANC....it's a missing feature on my a7siii that makes the 28-135 so much less capable, and the adaptor cable I got to control the a7siii via LANC did not work. so as of now, I use a sony dslm wired remote control that will control the zoom but with only 2 available speeds and a flimsy, pathetic interface connected by a relatively stiff cable

Where does the battery go and what sort is it?

(And where’s James0b57? He used to have interesting comments on new cameras, around the time I joined this forum.)

He made a Schrodinger joke that nobody got and then disappeared. Hopefully he'll come back sooner or later.

I assume the battery is the same as the A7SIII and slides into the right hand grip from beneath. Just because the body design is just like a stills camera. I can't remember what I'm getting on the A7SIII with those batteries but I think it's between 1.5 and 2.5 hours

A Schrödinger neutrino.

The rumored specs are either right or wrong and FX-3 appears to be A7SIII in a metal body.

Things come better in pairs, even when they're in 3's.

The other thing not mentioned is that the Cinema cameras use mxf file format. Since the FX6 is also really an A7S3 in a different box maybe this FX3 is really a FX6 in a smaller box with same files formats etc making it a perfect B camera for the FX6 as well as a drone camera. If it does have SDI and or Ethernet it would also be a good multicam unit like the Panasonic BG-H1 but full frame and with colour profile to match the other Sony Cinema cameras.

As an A7SIII and FX6 owner, I have found one issue between these two cameras. Because the A7SIII doesn’t have S-Cinetone, and because the FX6 doesn’t have any sort of picture profiles similar to what’s in Sony’s Alpha line, nor does it even have traditional Hypergammas, there seems to be no out-of-the-box way to really match these two cameras outside of log.

This is frustrating because while I shoot log for 90% of my work, I still have projects where I need a baked-in look. Examples are multi-camera live-streaming or projects where I’m hired to shoot and handover footage to a company that’s already colored. That happens from time to time in my work.

Without the A7SIII having S-Cinetone and without the FX6 having Hypergammas or normal picture profiles like the A7SIII has, I’m having a hard time getting them to match outside of log. I do know about the S-Cinetone profile someone over at Newshooter made, but that’s not a perfect out-of-the-box solution.

I don’t get Sony here. They release the A7SIII which is clearly aimed at videographers and has everything under the sun in it, but they leave out any way to match it to the FX6 and they leave out their new video specific picture profile. Meanwhile the FX6, FX9 and now the new A1 all have it. It’s frustrating because clearly the A7SIII was made to be a camera that would be used with these larger cinema cameras.

Now Sony is teasing their new FX3 which looks to be a variation of the A7SIII and I’ll bet money it has the S-Cinetone picture profile. That would be incredibly frustrating for people like me who’ve just purchased their A7SIII which was clearly made for video and just recently came out. Plus, I personally wouldn’t even buy the FX3 because I like using the viewfinder on the A7SIII, so that means I’m stuck. Either give up my A7SIII’s viewfinder to be able to match my FX6, or keep the A7SIII and don’t have a way to match my FX6.

Sony really needs to fix this, but I’m afraid now with the FX3 they won’t. They’ll just say, if you want S-Cinetone, you’ll have to buy the FX3. If you want a viewfinder, you’ll have to buy the A7SIII and forgo the S-Cinetone. That sucks.

Good points. I can see the need for the A7sIII to get a decent firmware update which includes matching ability with the X line as well as more video-centric tools like shutter angle and waveform.
