SONY FS700 + ODYSSEY 7Q SLog2 color issues

Good to hear a more sober testing :-)

Do you have pictures of the test?

Here's one. The pink bar is due to the fact I don't have the raw option enabled yet on my O7Q+, the right is O7Q. Quickly switched the SDI cable between the Odysseys. The light changed slightly cause there were clouds. Both have the same LUT applied to the image in Premiere.

Guess which one is the new firmware and which one is the old? :)

Nice! Its really hard to tell, and thats a good thing. Allthough i was hoping for "OMG" better image, but im not seeing it.

The image to the right has a slight yellow tint to it. Whereas the left looks more natural/whitebalanced.

I cant really spot anything in the skin colors. At first i thought the right looked more healthy, but now i see the whole image has a slight yellow tint to it. This is noticeable on the black clothing.

It's a custom LUT so take with a pinch of salt, although same LUT on both. I have to say I don't see any real difference nor a problem in my tests. But I only saw the problem in certain situations (as has been widely reported here by other users as well) with mixed light situations or using ISO values outside of the norm.

To me the image is plenty OMG though, couldn't hope for much better quality at the price I've paid for the system. Plus FS700 is already three years old and it still keeps delivering with the Odyssey. :)

Yeah it does.

I am still amazed at how i can spot the 4K2HD from the internal AVCHD when its edited together inside films and uploaded to Youtube/Vimeo.

It just feels completely wrong to shoot internal now. Not going to happen :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I for one would not make a firmware change in the middle of a production, and we even note this in the Odyssey manual. While we have improved the look coming out of the FS700, I would state that in general you should be able to color time the material to match close enough. No, we are not going to be documenting before and after adjustments to match footage, for various reasons. We fixed some technical issues so unless you feel like adding shadow banding and magenta edges to your new footage I'd say you'll just have to live without those completely matching. ;-)

BTW, there WAS an Alexa firmware that dramatically shifted the appearance of their REC709 video look. It caused a bit of surprise for a number of clients, and as I was Product Manager for Alexa products at my former employer I can tell you that this is not something new. I can also state that the differences were no less dramatic. So such a thing is not unheard of, even in your Alexa example.

What do you want us to do, not improve the product?
