SONY FS700 + ODYSSEY 7Q SLog2 color issues

Sorry, this has been discussed in several threads so I lost track.

We delayed our upcoming firmware release as we are directly addressing these issues. We believe we can either fix them or massively improve them. We have considerable progress already and believe that it should only be a short time before we can release the new firmware with the fixes in place.

I must note that the FS7 and the FS700 are different machines with different encodes on the output signal. This means that we have to treat them differently and the results or one may not be as successful as the other. That's not an indication of anything other than we are still in progress.

great news, mitch!

Translation: We've got FS7 almost perfect! FS700...not so much ;)

We have been right before, and to be honest, the outcome of the next firmware will affect future equipment for us this summer. So yeah, we are worried.

I have an important shoot coming up, that luckily has been postponed. I dont know if i can shoot it with my FS700 or not, right now.

Boy, and people wonder why other companies don't share like we do. Y'all jump to every conclusion in the book.

It's scary, isn't it. Put a little technical knowledge into the hands of the non-technically minded....I guess that's why God invented DIT's.

Thank you for sharing as much as you can, Mitch. Plenty of us appreciate what you're doing.

;) <---see this. It means it's a joke.
I understand, but you would not believe what people run with sometimes. A few months ago I wrote a tweet and in trying to save characters substituted a "2" for the word "two". I was flooded with private messages trying to interpret some grand meaning out of it.

Still it's nothing like the heyday of RED frenzy (as in RED Digital Cinema, not the Communist fear-mongering of the 1950s). I remember literally getting chased down hallways during NAB for secret information I didn't have. I didn't even work for RED!

Wow 3 months since this was posted and still no fix! I'm shooting a narrative short on my FS700+7Q+ in 4k prores starting tomorrow and just hoping this doesnt screw me... no hints or tricks or workarounds at all eh? It can't be that bad, right? I mean if it was footage destroying and unfixable in post I'd hope CD would've released a fix months ago?...

Seems really strange to me that CD would release prores recording 7 months ago and still have no fix for the image quality? Something strange is definitely going on with CD's engineering team if it takes them even more than a month to fix something like this, and it's not very reassuring... Regular firmwares being constantly past deadlines doesn't help either. Argh.

I did use multicam monitoring on a job recently which is always a great unique feature that I love the 7Q for, but still it's so disappointing to see CD constantly struggle with getting firmwares out.

I also find some weird Color transitions in Skintone in my 2K RAW footage...either I do something wrong or this issue also affects RAW!

Hi Mitch! Is there any prospect of a correction LUT? Is the error within the debayer, the transform from linear to slog2..?

Sorry Kris, I'm not sure what you're asking for. We have already released a correction LUT.

The new firmware will address the creation of CinemaDNG RAW files as well as RAW-to-Apple-ProRes files in a different way than in the past. We believe that we have corrected for the issues of the past, at least to the level that is technically feasible. This new firmware will be released soon.

Sorry, I'm asking whether the error is such that a LUT or correction matrix is possible, to mitigate the harm? An awful lot of material has clearly already been shot.

I would also be happy if CD gave some sort of workflow as to how to approach the problem with gradation of skin tones in post. I have over 30 days worth of material shot for a feature film and now that we are starting to do some color grading we notice the problems much more clearly then in the dailies we've watched so far.

I would imagine if you shot RAW, that might be possible, since you have pre-debayer data. If it's all prores, I don't know how you would fix the issues posted in this thread with a LUT.
