SONY FS700 + ODYSSEY 7Q SLog2 color issues

Depends on the nature of the error.

At the very least we should expect CD to explain the nature of what's going wrong so that we can develope stragergies to minimise the harm.

I would imagine if you shot RAW, that might be possible, since you have pre-debayer data. If it's all prores, I don't know how you would fix the issues posted in this thread with a LUT.

There are no colour issues with RAW, at least i've never had any. This just relates to ProRes recordings.

cheers
Paul

I would also be happy if CD gave some sort of workflow as to how to approach the problem with gradation of skin tones in post. I have over 30 days worth of material shot for a feature film and now that we are starting to do some color grading we notice the problems much more clearly then in the dailies we've watched so far.

Use the colour qualifier in Resolve to select the problem areas, then correct them to match and add a little blur to blend it into the surrounding areas.

I tried to "create" the issue today- I became aware of this problem yesterday while reading here, and I can also notice a difference between the Prores vs. the AVCHD image. Although I didn't manage to make it look as bad as the image that attambur posted, it would be nice if this issue could be solved as soon as possible.

I think if CD manage to fix this it will seriously take up the FS700 up another big notch. The thing is, it's something that you don't really notice before you're applying a color grade, hence why people will start noticing it way more after we get LUT's on the Odyssey.

Firmware: 2015.5
As far I can see, new firmware improves a lot color skin, without purple banding.
Odyssey has now much better color than internal AVCHD codec. This sample is intentionally poorly lit and very saturated for testing.
I used Film Convert for grading.
As far I have more results I'll post here.

Left frame is from FS700 AVCHD (1080p) and Right frame is from CD ODISSEY 7Q ProRES 4K.

Thank you for this attambur.

Im not sure what has been upgraded.

But this vast improvement in the Odyssey image over the internal AVCHD skin color, is one of the reasons i purchased the Odyssey to begin with.

Internal image just looks yucki. Which is why i guess most low budget cinematographers swore to the C300 instead of the videoish FS700 pre-Odyssey as well.

Hi Mitch, are you still monitoring this thread or should I reach out via CD support?

75% through a feature. Switched to new odyssey firmware as keen to get rid of known issues. Everything looks quite different. Can we expect guidance on what the differences are and how to go about correcting/matching?

if you're in the middle of a feature, I'd recommend rolling back to the same firmware you shot the rest of the footage with and finish your feature. Change firmware when you're done.

Totally! Switching in the middle of a shoot seems quite crazy ;)

I upgraded mine and felt a great advantage because of the improvement on banding issue. Skin is far from perfection IMO, but way better than last firmware.

You don't upgrade the Alexa firmware and expect a totally different look.

You also don't get the Alexa for under 10k, lol. Plus, they're Arri so...not even close to being remotely in the ballpark of comparison.

It's a good thing that CD are striving to improve the image though right? I'm finally very happy looking at that screen now with a -2 lut on while i squeeze the best out of the upper dynamic range. It looks fantastic and a quick flick of false colour and the waveform is peace of mind.

Given the track record, you would have to be mad to change over mid shoot or extremely confident in your grading abilities! But under the same circumstances I would be soooooo tempted to upgrade mid shoot too ;)

I did a side by side comparison and don't see any drastic change in the look, only improvements. I'm 80% done with a feature shoot and can honestly say there's absolutely no reason not to upgrade.

Good to hear a more sober testing :-)

Do you have pictures of the test?

Well, probably not. Though it wouldn't suprise me, if even an Alexa woudln't be updated during a shoot!

Plus, with this update is was pretty obvious, that the colour rendering was going to change!

Anyway - good luck!
