Sony FS100 Discontinuation Announced Today

Sony just discontinued the FS100 today.

There's limited inventory available just in case you have to have an FS100.

So I preordered the FS100 on announcement and took delivery of a GH4 to replace it on the day it was discontinued.

I must pay tribute to this graceful little camera, the ugly duckling of large sensor video cameras.

It has served me well, never missed a beat.

-reactive menu twice as fast as the FS7
-elegant built in XLR unlike the sh_tty arangements on the A7s, C100/300
-small form unlike the F3
-multiple mount points unlike most DSLRs
-flip and front screen unlike most DSLRs
-big HDMI unlike most DSLRs

Really it is IMO kind of a design classic, Oh for an FS200 with Slog and 100mbs XAVC. (and ND)

And the next question is - what replaces it?

FS7 de facto replaced FS700 and there's a big gap now in Sony's 4K lineup.

To me after a lot of thought the gh4 and yah box are the replacement.

the uk gh4 does not roll for hours though and probably does not have the same lowlight

All hail the Sony FS100!! I sold it way too early for a blackmagic cinema camera. Sometimes what everyone thinks is the latest and greatest isn't what you really need!

The FS7 hasn't replaced the FS700 ... it doesn't do the same high frame rates. And the FS700 can do 4K with any one of the external recorders now available from an array of manufacturers.

The FS100 was a beast and still a great B cam (shame about the ND's though). RIP FS100.

A7s is $2,500 (~ $5,000 with the external 4K monitor/recorder), full frame, no internal 4K.

FS700 is $6,000 (~ $8,500 with the external monitor/recorder), s35, no internal 4K.

FS-7 is $8,000, s35, internal 4K.

From a marketing standpoint, there's room here for a ~ $4,000 ILC camcorder with an internal 4K and an s35 sensor that won't step on FS7 toes. Unfortunately, it may be currently occupied by JVC LS300. Sony may have to wait in queue along with everyone else. On the other hand, FS7 is a huge, huge seller, so Sony shouldn't feel too aggrieved.

I have 2. No plans to sell anything. I might pickup a 3rd at the used prices I've seen. I'll drive em till the wheels fall off. The high price bleeding edge is...well, I don't like to bleed. just deliver great product.

And it doesn't have the sensor size or form factor and requires additional external power.

Best bang for the buck for many years, I have three and will keep them till they die. Next up more than likely the Ursa mini or possibly the FS7.
