Well to me 90% of Slog material looks, well, wooden (aka total crap) - which is a lack of contrast in the skin.
The milky grey look - it may be fashionable for a bit of arthouse but ultimately it is a bit crap!
So to me skin is all.
Recovering highs and lows is the next step and seem to be touched on by my 'flow in post 26.
'Man' is to some extent a complex shot in that (if you view the WFM) you will see that there is enough contrast to render the skin 'not wooden' but also those highlights are held - and recovering them through without too much ear burn is not straight-forward.
Ive been selfie shooting this morning and have basically concluded that a lot of my material is under exposed - seems like 55% zebra on the forehead is about right.. I have not been hitting that.
