Sony F3 motion blur

No sense on crying over spill milk. That is old, How about new shooting? Are you still having the problem once you check your settings?

I have a shoot in a couple of days and I will be posting the results when I'm done. Its not a paid job fortunately so its a good testing ground.

For the love of god, go test when it ISN'T a shoot! Lol.

Go test different settings, hire a model for a few hours ( "model" aka girlfriend/wife/boyfriend/husband and buy them dinner), and do it. We really can't solve the problems from the internet. You gotta get out there and see what works.

Also, again..... what are you monitoring on?

When I'm on a shoot I usually monitor either on a SmallHD DP6 when space is tight or a Panasonic BT-LH900. I'll post some tests in the next few days.

Please post tests! Im going to get my F3 and living in PAL land, I have to shoot always at 25fps, Im afraid with this unexpected issue.

It was clear that the first video had motion blur. The only question was if it was a camera problem or operators.
I think that that was clear when the shutter was raced to 1/250th sec. and it showed the SPR effect.
I don't even know why there is still any question on the 25p setting having motion blur.

Simple questions....what lens/aperature settings are you using. At 24/25p a wide lens tends to exaggerate motion across the X and Z axis. Causing this sort of problem. Also Timer is right, you need to set angle to 180 for proper blur. Use a longer lens stepped down a bit to prevent jitter.
Film cameras run into the same thing when the lens/aperture don't work for the scene.

HI all,

Just a quick update on the motion blur issue. After lengthy conversations with Prime Support where we checked all the settings and also carried out a few tests, they have decided they would like to have a look at the camera as they think there is indeed an issue. The guy I spoke to did add that although the F3 is too new for them to know all the possible issues it might get, he had seen similar problems with EX cameras in the past. I will be sure to let you know what their verdict is once they have looked at it.

Here was another test.

Twickers, thank you for the update. Please do keep us informed. This can be a deal breaker for many pal users if this is really an XDCAM or a Sony implementation of 25P issue.

Well after a week with the camera I now understand what Twickers was taking about. I have also found a distracting motion blur.
I've tried 23.97 at all frame rates, but you go from blur to stutter. Even at 59.94 you see, maybe not as bad.
I've heard a couple of thing about it, but I can't confirm nor denied since I haven't tested it my self.
1. Since he camera is so sharp, motion seams blurrier.
2. When transfer to film and projected it looks normal again.

Download this original clip, go frame by frame and tell me what you think. By the way I had the shutter at 174 degrees since I was using florescent lights that fliker a little bit. http://www.mediafire.com/?v2w36vwc5815m

That clip was recorded to Sony SxS to SDHC, but I was testing with a 42" LED 120 Htz directly out of camera. I also played back to a Sony CRT monitor.

Does the LED TV have a "Motion magic" mode turned off???

I dont really see a major problem.

What is the issue?

yeah, this would be due to the marketing gimmik in your tv known as 120hz. It does not accept and display frame for frame 120hz signals, it takes normal 60hz (or 25p, or 30p, etc) signals and tries its best to guess what happens in between frames (motion estimation). It does all this so it can advertise "smoother motion" as timur mentioned, however the end result is always ass. Go through your tv's menus and find anything that mentions motion, 120hz, smoothness, magic, or wizardry and turn it off. downloaded the clip, looked perfect on a calibrated u2410. Each frame and the motion was actually so sharp it looked stuttery due to the 24p framerate. as for your crt, no idea.

You are forgetting a couple of things.
1. You can see the same motion on a Sony CRT monitor.
2. Most likely this images will be seen on LCDs, therefor it should look good on them.
3. We are not talking about fast motion. This is some one just turning his face to the side.
4. Non of my other cameras (HVX200, Canon HX A1, HV20, DSLRs) show this kind of motion blur.

It looks like the ship can't refresh fast enough 'cause I see it before it records.

I'll do more tests today out doors to eliminate my fluorescents and recording to the KiPro Mini at ProRes HQ and see how it looks on the Sony CRT.

Most first generation cameras require a software update. I just hope that if this is a software problem, that it gets fixed before I start production of "The Awakening" 10/17/11.
