Sony F3 motion blur

Hi All,

I wonder if anyone has noticed any excessive motion blur whilst using the F3? I get that effect a lot, especially when I have a static frame and the subject is moving within it. This seems to happen with both the shutter on and off.

Any insights would be much appreciated.

What speed is your shutter when it's on? What happens when you crank the shutter way up? Post some raw footage.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. The shutter is always set at 1/50th. I am on a shoot at the moment with another camera but as soon as I'm home I will post some footage.

I have noticed the same thing. Recently shot a spot with a subtle dolly move and an actor walking and the motion blur of the actors head was a bit distracting. Looked at it with my FCP KONA set-up, and the agencies AVID 5.5 suite.

did u try adding sharpness in post?

If you are shooting in NTSC land and don't want the motion blur effect I would suggest shooting in 1080p29.97 or 720p29.97 with shutter on, set your shutter speed to 1/60 or if you are using shutter angle set it to 180 degrees and leave it there.

I assume you do not have slow shutter accidentally invoked. I would check just to make sure.

24/25 FPS is going to give you a measurable degree of blur that is the nature of that look.

F3 has the same 24p motion as every other 24p camera out there.

Set your shutter to degrees, and make sure its set to 180 Degrees.

I tried setting the shutter to 45 and 90 degrees and it did not reduce motion blur to the extent I expected. 180 looked natural but decreasing the shutter angle did not seem to have much effect.

Look at it on a proper monitor first.

Onboard lcd's don't have the refresh rate to render motion properly.

Here is a random bunch of shots that illustrate the problem. The more I look through footage I have shot with it, the more I seem to think that that there is something I am simply not getting or that there actually is something wrong with my camera.

The guys walking across the shop does seem a bit funny. I've never used an F3 but I'm guessing it's pretty similar to the EX1. You set the shutter speed in the menu but it only takes effect if the shutter switch is on. It looks like you might have had it off in which case I believe the shutter would be the reciprocal of the frame rate. Are you certain the shutter speed was displayed on the LCD while recording? Play with higher shutter speeds to see if the camera handles them properly.

Again, I've never used the F3 so maybe I'm just way off with all this.

Okay, this is fascinating to me for one reason. Over in the AF100 forums there was a lot of discussion about the same sort of thing with the AF100 and 25p. I never saw it with 24p.

When I watched these clips, like the neck of the instrument moving back and forth, I saw juddering in the image. It was not smooth. Is this what you are seeing?

I would try recording in 24p things you know would make that effect and see what they look like. Note, I am not saying that you should be in 24p but there is definitely something specific to 25p and I have seen it now on multiple cameras (and I saw it on the AF100 as well as I said).

I am viewing the footage in the US on YouTube on an LCD refreshing at 60Hz and who knows what YouTube is doing to the video. I suspect that the camera is probably recording properly, but the viewing mechanisms for how that 25p is getting translated around is the problem.

Excuse my 25p ignorance as I know NOTHING about where you are and what frame rates you use and such, but do you have a display that can display native 25p hooked directly to the camera? Or maybe something that does 50? Just some thoughts to try. Try to eliminate more variables and see if maybe there is something post camera that is the issue.
